uninstall all the firewall applications first....then make sure there isnt any unneeded programs running in the back round... (msconfig.......) start there first....

XP refusing to shut down is usually the result of some service or other refusing to stop. I assume this didn't use to happen up to a certain point, so what you should do is try to think back to the moment when the problem first occured. Any major system alterations? Software installations? Try to backtrack and undo all the changes you have made recently. Who knows? Maybe you'll get lucky. And yes, definitely start with all the firewall software. Besides, what do you need several firewalls for? Choose one and stick with it. Good luck.

One more thought. If it's a runaway service, it will probably show in the event viewer, so you may wanna try that first.
