Default Custom system restore cd

A lot of pre-built systems (hp and such) come with a system restore disk, which returns the computer to the exact state it came from the factory, with all the pre-built software installed and such...

Is there any way to create my own disk of that sort? Like to have it automatically install windows along with a certain set of drivers and programs right from the get go, rather than having to install everything separately? It would be nice to be able to format my hard drive then just pop in a cd and get back to at least a basic setup without having to update everything after installing windows.

Any ideas?

Yes, you can do it. I haven't had any success with my retail version of XP though. I believe you may need to have an OEM copy to start from. The additional drivers/apps go into a folder within the i386 folder titled $OEM$ which is further broken down into two more directories $1 and $$. I haven't looked for anything further for a while, but I'm pretty sure all the details are available somewhere in Microsoft's massive website. I'll look and see if I have anymore info in the morning (I may have the details and just forgot).

I have a Retailers Windows XP Pre-Installation CD/KIT. Allows you to build an install on your PC and then burn/install it on many PCs. Sounds exactly like what your wanting. Allows you to select drivers and such as well as allowing you to put your own logos and contact information throught the XP environment. You then can do all the updates after the install and also install any other software then "reseal" the installation.

You know I'd seen that on a site before and wondered what it was...... ugh! If you only knew how much time I spent on trying to figure out how to do it myself. Well, I did learn a TON about how windows installs most things.

Here's a link for it..... $5..... ugh.....

I appreciate the additional input, but what Wyzard (and myself, for far too long) is trying to accomplish is a regular XP install CD which will also install system specific drivers and additional applications.

Those links are great resources though.

edit: Here's as far as I got in my research, this is how to do it manually for Win2K, most of it works fine with XP I haven't tried it all out though so there may be some differences:

There is a way to do it I believe, but I'll have to dig thru some links maybe.

I was reading up on slipstreaming SP1 as Lord Dragon posted, and ran across some files that would let you make an unattended install disc that would also allow you to setup other apps and drivers to be installed as well.

Maybe try google for creating an unattended Xp installation Cd.

[Edit] Nevermind, I found a good link.

I have the same thing, but it was when XP RC1 was out, before they released XP. Its quite handy, as when I had RC1 installed, it crashed quite abit, so I was able to repair it quickly. Its good to havbe a brother whose a system rebuilder, and has access to stuff like that
