| Hey guys, someone sent this to me in an email about workin with registry, and found it to be very helpful. I don't think that you could mess up anything really with any of these settings that you can change. With one of the settings though, i got my comp to start up at least 3 times faster! I dont know if anyone has posted this before, but anyhow, here it is: http://php.technobabble.com.au/content-16.html Some of the stuff didnt work for me, but you know...thats just the way windows is.... | ||

| http://www.clankiller.com/code.php that's the good stuff. some of it's just good common sense, but there are a couple of really nice tweaks in there. Sexy, you've got a point though. I wouldn't mess with any of the memory paging settings if you're regularly gonna be doing horrible things to your memory ![]() | ||

Awesome, Carbon. Although now that I know, I don't really know what to do with this incredible knowledge in my hands

hey dakas, how could changing one thing under the registry for the ram speed up damage it permanently? i thought that almost anything you change thats not harmless to like your data be affected permanently?

| ? I never said it would damage it permanently, but you could make windows pretty unstable, and then you'd just have to go and change it back, and noone wants to waste time like that. plus, it's never a good idea to mess around with the registry unless you're pretty confident in what you're doing. i've done many a reformat because the windows install was no longer bootable. (not on my machine, of course. more fun to screw up my friends'...) | ||

| i agree with whoever made this thread, he wasnt trying to bs anyone, this tweak is rampant throughout the tweaking knowledge base and is used extensively (you will want to have 256mb or more ram to use it however), im myself am using it and yes, it does work, so quit wasting your times complaining and do the tweak, it isnt going to cripple anything and if you dont like it, change the setting, if you dont feel confident in doing that, you have bigger problems than regedit.... EDIT: this tweak does not eliminate your page file (virtual memory), it loads your core windows executive into physical ram so that basic windows operations (bootup, delete, move, blah blah) run at the speed of ram instead of pagefile....anyone who has used RAMDRIVE knows just how much faster **** is when its running directly from phys mem as opposed to pulling an app from the HDD..... EDIT EDIT: i can say the word "****", which admin died for this "****" to happen? | ||

let me put it this way..... PC-100 SDRAM makes your hard drives throughput look like a coffee straw.....in fact, just about ANY memory interface will talk to the cpu wayyyyyyyyyyyy faster than even the fastest of hard drives, so as long as you have ALOT of ram, you are good, type and speed are immaterial....and negligible...

| I got this from http://x9000.net/ . At the bottom of the page is a download section. There's a 160+ page document for Windows tweaks. DisablePagingExecutive You can read more on this in NT tips. When enabled, this setting will prevent the paging of the Executive files to the hard drive, causing the OS and most programs to be more responsive. However, it is advised that people should only perform this tweak if they have a significant amount of RAM on their system (128 MB+), because this setting does use a substantial portion of your system resources. By default, the value of this key is 0. To enable it, set it to 1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management\DisablePagingExecutive Set the value to be 1. Reboot the computer | ||
