Default Automatic Shutdown

ok... maybe I'm just not noticing where to change this so I figured I'd ask you guys. For the life of me I can't seem to find out how to change it so that when my computer says "it is now safe to shut down your computer" it will automatically shut down... I'm just sick of standing near my computer while it's shutting down then having to push the power button (yeah.. you got me... I'm lazy! hahaha) anyway... is that something in windows XP that I can change, or is that in the BIOS?

I'd just like to second this question...our old gateway has had that issue since we switched to WinXP. Since I don't get on it much, I don't have time to mess with the settings. Now that I narrowed it down to WinXP, does anyone have a "fix" for it?

It depends on whether, or how well, your mobo and bios supports XP. Many older systems have problems with this. One fix I've seen is to turn off ACPI in the bios.

In WinXP, a single messed up driver can mess up your exit strategy.

A coupla ones I've personally run into:

HARDWARE DRIVERS:

Logitech Webcam 3000
Intel HAM Modem

SOFTWARE RELATED:

Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum (unpatched).

Might go into Microsoft updates (Internet Explorer, Tools, Windows Update) and see if they have a fix for you. If that doesn't do it, try going into each companies website and see if they have a driver update.

If all else fails, Microsoft has a force shutdown program for XP... but they don't suggest it unless you've tried everything else.

I have had the same problem in the past with XP, found a fix for it, but forgot to bookmark it.
This pic might help, it explains a little bit about the error I had, and get when I have upgraded a few other older computers.
You need to do a search for code 22, and the fix is pretty easy, I found this when I was testing at PCPitstop.

I had the same problem as Dark Samurai as far as EZ CD Creator is concerned, except that Adaptec still owned it then.
I haven't had that issue since going with Nero Burning ROM.

Godfoot, main problem with Easy CD Creator was the fact Windows XP integrated burning software is based off the Roxio kernel already... They fixed it shortly after XP was released, but not on the disc... so if you didn't go into Roxio's site, you were pretty well boned.

i've been through this before with my mom's old Sony VIAO...

From TweakXP.com:

Many people have been having problems with their system not automatically closing down when they 'turn off' their PC. This is because of the APM setting which is not enabled. To enable it, right click on my computer goto properties select hardware and click device mangager.

Click view and then on show hidden devices. You should see the NT ATM / Legacy Interface mode with a red cross on it. Double click it and on the screen that appears at the bottom choose enable from the drop down menu.

Your PC should now automatically switch off completely on shutdown.

Note: If there is no NT ATM / Legacy Interface mode in your device manager, then this tweak will not work with your system.

That's alright, I like Nero MUCH better anyway. Thanks for the info though, always nice to learn something new that I might be able to pass on later.

Well this really isnt a solution but definatly a work around.

You could just put:

shutdown -s

into a batch file, create a shortcut to the batch file, and fire it off to shutdown your computer. Alternatively you may want to take a more hardcore approach and use:

shutdown -s -f

so it will "impolitely" kill all running apps.
