Default How to enable Hibernate Button in XP.

Hey guys. This has been a problem that I handn't been able to fix till today. Some people may have seen computers with the hibernate button in the shutdown box on XP. Most of you have not. I really wanted this feature on my laptop. O and BTW make sure you backup your registry before you toy around with it.

Heres how to do it.

First, apply the Hotfix's that I have attached in the Zip file.

Then, in the registry, create this key:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Wi ndows\System\Shutdown

Create a DWORD value named ShowHibernationButton and set its data to 1.

Restart and you have the the button in your shutdown dialog box .

You can also simply press H to hibernate at this screen, whether you have the seperate button or not. U is shutdown, R is restart.

i thought this option was made availabe by simply going into the screen saver options
clicking on the "power" button, choosing the "hibernation" tab, and just enabling it

good to know there's more than one way of doing it

No, that's just how you enable the physical function. You still have to press Shift or H in order to do it, unless you follow WDog's method.

Whats the point in hibernation? Do services such as FAH still run in the background?

Hibernation is if you have to shut the machine off, but don't want to wait for the full cold boot load time/are in the middle of something important and want to save your progress even though you have to shut down.

What it does is dumps a copy of what's actually in ram into the hibernation file on your disk along with some extra state information so that when you next boot, it's just like returning to what you were doing. Nothing 'continues' in the background or anything like that because everything is frozen at that point.

I use this if I'm working on something important on my laptop at home that won't really 'save' well, and need to take the lappy with me on a LONG drive before I'll have a chance to work on it again (basically, if it's something I don't wanna lose my place on when I go to or from work) I'll hibernate instead of shutting down.

Oh I see it actually powers off the computer but basically takes a snapshot of whatever you were doing at the time? Neat, think ill try that.

Lol...welcome to Windows XP....

I use it all the time because I rarely leave my PC on if I'm not using it. TBH I have no idea why Hibernate isn't the shutdown function in XP because it does practically the same thing, yet much faster and more conveniently.

My wife used to Hibernate her laptop ALL the time instead of shutting down and starting back up when she shut down, and eventually there are all kinds of messed up issues until you reboot fully. Dunno exactly what was causing it or why, but it only happened when she would hibernate regularly over a long period of time.

Your mileage, of course, may vary.

Yeah, I always turn it off at night, so hopefully I won't suffer those kind of problems.

Hey, I was just surprised you didn't know what hibernate was. XP has been out for six years now lol. It's a very useful feature. Being a Folder though, I guess you leave your PC on most of the time, so it's probably not that useful for you.

I very rarely turn my PC off. Can't actually remember the last time it was off, just doesn't feel right
