I'm not sure if this is old stuff for you all but for me it was absolutely smashing.
Apparantely the HLT signal does not actually make the AMD Athlon and AMD Duron processors to go into powersaving mode.
Only by passing the STPGNT (Stop Grant) and thereby disconnecting the
FSB from the processor does it actually go into sleep mode.
There are some patches and tools to fix this along with quite extensive documentation
here
The above link deals mainly with linux, after i ran the patch my idletemp immediately dropped 10 degrees and continued to inch down to a nice and cozy 35 degrees (celsius).
There's a tool for windows as well, it can be found
here but I haven't tested it.
I've always been thinking that my idletemp was quite close to my my load temp and now I have the explanation!
