If it just needs a 'normal' HDMI cable, which from the pictures of the input/output panel on the PS3 seem to confirm, then that's cool. You can get an HDMI cable online for like 15 bucks...
If it's a proprietary cable...that only works with the PS3...that sucks hard...
But, the majority of HDTV owners (at least the ones that purchased one 6 months or longer ago) do not have HDMI inputs on their TVs, so it doesn't really effect them anyways.
But, Joe Shmoe gamer is going to be none to pleased to find out that they can't connect their new PS3 to their new TV with that 'hdmi dohickey' without the hdmi 'power cord' that can be purchased at Best Buy/Circuit City in the low-low price range of 80-150 bucks!!!
Though, the system will come with component cables...so you'll still be able to hook it up to a TV. Not a big deal...but Sony isn't really doing a bang up job on marketing the PS3 (at the moment) as the 'true'
HD gaming system when the cable that will allow most TVs to accept a 1080p resolution isn't even included in the box...
