Yesterday was hot and humid for 11am. Waiting for my pre-ordered Nintendo DS Lite was a nightmare, as I and other DS hopefuls stood in a line long enough to curve around the building. Too many sweaty, stinky, pimple-faced teenage boys were in front of me because unfortunately, I was the only girl in a crowd of around fifty people. It was awkward, but I dealt with it so I could get my hands on the new Nintendo DS Lite.
As I waited for the store to open, I discussed my hopes for the new DS with a few guys standing around me. We were all wondering if the new DS was going to be worth the money, as many of the people in line had an original DS too. As a marketing scheme, Nintendo lowered the price of the original DS right before the DS Lite came out, making both a whopping $129.99. Many store employees tried to convince me to buy the original, but I waited patiently for the release of the Lite system. When Nintendo released the DS handheld console it faced a major problem – the Sony PSP. Not only did Sony’s new console sport PlayStation branding, but it also gave Nintendo an object lesson is design methodology. Put simply, the PSP looked awesome and instilled all onlookers with a desire to own one, and that was before you even considered the superior graphics, sound and multimedia functionality.
