| | Saturday GameApex News Short Short and too the point, so you can get on with your weekend. (And yes I know it is early, but I wanted to get this one in.) Some good stuff today, so let's get to it! - Future Consoles to Lack Disc Drives? One of the most interesting features touted by the 360 and PS3 have been the integrated next-gen disc players, including optional HD DVD support for the Xbox and a Blu-ray drive being standard on the PS3. Once the PS3 starts to wane, though, and Sony looks to future consoles, it seems they are looking to do away with with optical drives. This could mean they are looking to potentially make all content online-only or downloadable-only, something we are already see some companies experiment with. Currently, we see things such as the EA Downloader and Steam. While both have been the subject of much criticism, both seem to have had a lot of success in content distribution. While the PS4 is years and years off, it's still an interesting notion and one that poses a lot of more questions.
- Nvidia brings out the big guns!!!! Nvidia reveals an $18,000. PC graphics card! As if PC gaming wasn't expensive enough, Nvidia have unveiled a graphics card that will be known to shooter fans simply as 'God'. The $18K Quadro Plex 1000. How's your e-penis now? You could buy a pretty decent sports car for that kind of money. Or, according to Nvidia, you can have 12 mega pixel hi-def video, and a card (actually it's more like a series of cards) that will run every PC game due for release in the next century.
"According to Nvidia, a node can achieve up to 64x full scene anti-aliasing (FSAA), deliver a performance of up to 148 megapixels on 16 synchronized digital-output channels and eight HD SDI channels. The firm says that the fill rate reaches 80 billion pixels/s while the geometry performance is rated at seven billion vertices/s." The cheapest model starts at $17,500, and it just goes up from there! When they're released in September, we'll probably give a few away. Or, maybe we'll buy a house instead!
The only problem with owning one of these cards is you'd need about 20 of the latest CPUs in order to feed it data quick enough that the CPU wouldn't become a massive bottleneck. Of course, they're designed for integrated graphics computers and engineers, not really gaming! (see attached image) - Top Ten Greatest Achievements in Gaming. If you can check off most on the list, you might be a gaming icon! Check the List
- If you missed it last week Winrar was giving away a free copy of their 3.51 archiever. Well, the servers were so overloaded that most people could not get it either. Here is your second chance! WinRAR is giving away a free copy of their award-winning archiver utility application again, due to the fact that previous attempt was too hard on their servers. This version 3.51 can not be upgraded to future releases. It supports all major archiving formats, including Zip, RAR and 7-Zip.
- Finally, I have a charity that is called Get Well Gamers. I found out about them at E3 in April, and wanted to mention them again. Any time you can help someone it is a good thing, but to help a child puts a smile on your face, a light in your heart and does the same for them.
Have a great weekend!
Thank you. |
