| With Windows Vista they are already releasing, and announcing titles that will be made for the OS. For games you have and will be buying prior to the release, are you concerned about compatability issues? Concerned that maybe you will not be able to play all your games once you make the switch? There is an article at ExtremeTech, Will Vista Run Your Games that is worth a look. For those already running Vista beta here is a list of what works with the current Vista and patch, and what does not. What works with the latest patch install Unreal Tournament Unreal Gold American McGee's Alice 4x4 Evolution (Display wrong) 4x4 Evolution 2 Motocross Madness 2 (some rendering terrain error show up) Quake 2 (must switch OpenGL Quake 2 Ground Zero (must switch OpenGL) Quake 2 The Reckoning (must switch OpenGL) Monopoly Star Wars (Text color a bit off I think cuases by video drivers) Aliens versus Predator (Rigth side Menu messup) Pandora's Box Expert Software Card Game Classics for 95 Microsoft Golf v2 Microsoft Golf v3 Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Hasbro Risk (Need enable compatibility mode on CD setup) Atari Missile Command Hasbro Frogger Hasbro Centipede Sierra Ultra Pinball (No sound when playing) Crystal Key Monster Truck Madness Need For Speed - Porsche Unleashed (some rendering terrain error show up) G-Police (No Joystick) Descent III (some rendering terrain error) Descent III Mercenary (some rendering terrain error) TuneLand Quake III Arena Quake III Team Arena Star Trek Elite Force II KISS Psycho Circus The Nightmare Child Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 Raven Shield GT Interactive Driver Combat Flight Simulator WWII Europe Series Schizm Myst I Masterpiece Edition DVD Myst II Riven DVD Myst III Exile DVD DeusEx Need For Speed High Stakes (Softmode only with no patch and D3D and patch don't work) Giants Harley Davidson Race Across America What doesn't work even with the latest patch install The C.H.A.O.S. | Am I concerned - no. Main reason is that I'll keep an older computer that plays the games natively, and have one that is native to vista to go forward with. M$ has been saying for a while that it was going to drop support for legacy programs back X amount of time, if they don't support 16 bit games natively, someone will write/develop an emulator that can handle those 'antiquated' games. Considering the native bloat of vista, using up another 1/2 - 1 gb of memory for an emulator won't be that big of a deal. Now do I believe that M$ can or will support / address those applications in this version of Windows (per the poll question)? Not really based on their track record. Gamers are a hearty bunch, and there will be clamouring for a way to play older games. Maybe some of our Linux people who work at porting games over will devote some spare brain cycles to make a windows emulator like dosbox that is not just 8-bit compatible, but up to 32-bit compatible. | ||
