| Sir Knight of Spamalot | Found this link (along with others) Homemade Refrigeration System With Propane Refrigerant. Im betting you can make the whole thing for about 30 Bucks. (Thats IF you can find a dead refrigerator around or an AC unit. for the compressor.) If you could make it for that much, it would be a better alternative to water cooling...The only problem is how would you get the compressor off the refrig. or ac unit?

Because soldering is filling - no bonding to the parent materials. You want to braze refrigeration system lines. It's kinda a small detail I know, but if you're going to write an article about refrigation, especially when talking about inflammable gasses, you don't want to write it out like a Jr. High school report. Anyways - propane isn't used in the US for a reason - it's a very inefficient refrigerant. Normally only used in European nations... the eastern ones.

Isnt freon the choice of american fridges and freezers?

Freon is like Kleenex - brand names that got so over used it's now viewed as just another name for refrigerants. Freon was the brand name for Dupont chemical's CFC based refrigerants. That said, most commonly refrigerant for refrigerators/freezers is R-134A due to it's low cost and it's almost as good as R-12. That's the gist. ![]() P.S. I normally recharge freezers that origonally had R-134A and lost their charge with Hot Shot (R-414B). I find it generally works better and I don't have to change the oil in the system.

| Apex Tech Fanatic | What you mean we shouldn't build pressurized bombs waiting to explode because of faulty soldering/brazing? and then play with the pressure by controlling independant valves? Which so happens to be hand controlled.... so your guarenteed to be about (---------) that close when the thing goes boom...

I don't know - I adjust many of my machines by hand; example my skinning machine uses a frozen drum to freeze the skin to it for cutting with liquid cooling on the condensor. I just have my manifold set on it when I do it. I perfer valves over cap tubes for that reason - easy to adjust to peak perforance with varied temps/cooling. But yah - rea |
