| Apex Techie II | Has anyone tried it? I was at Home Depot picking up some electrical parts for my current project and I saw it on the shelf. It's described on the can as an insulating foam sealant which is both airtight and water resistant. My idea was to use this to seal around the cold side of my peltier (437W) and the socket of the mobo instead of using a less than airtight solution such as cut pieces of foam. The only concern I have right now is ease of removal if I ever need to remove the proc for upgrades or whatever. Stupid idea or no? | That stuff is Nasty,dont get it on your skin,it burns. Also it expands so much its hard to control where its going and tends to ooze out . I absolutely would NOT recomend using it . Stick with the tried and proven methods,either neoprene ,or build little boxes with removable tops from pink foam. you can use silicone as adhesive. Dont forget to use conformant coating on the vid card and or Mobo for added protection. | ||

| I hope this isn't too late, but I read this article about a guy cooling his P3 with a Peltier and a liquid cooling system (or maybe it was some fans... but that's not important). He used i think "Injectafoam" or something like that. He said it did a real nice job sealing everyhing. Later when he tried it out, everything was working fine. He shut down for the night and the next day, when he tried to boot, that system would stay on for a few seconds, then shut off. It turned out that some of the foam was not dry when he last tried it. Over night, it expanded and pushed the cold plate off the CPU die, so it would over heat. Just thought I'd throw that in | ||

| Apex Techie II | Thank you both for your suggestions and warnings! I decided to heed your advice and I'm just going with the precut neoprene foam and dielectric grease. I've also decided to go with a much smaller pelt than I had originally planned- the Swiftech water cooled 225W one instead of a custom water cooled 437W. Also I decided to use my aux power supply to run the entire water loop as well as the pelt to ensure my system doesn't melt down in case of a relay failure. Thanks again everyone!!! You could also rig up a simple circuit to kill the power to your pc in the event that there is a failure with you aux supply. I am sure your BIOS has temp thresholds that you could use aswell, but if you would like to be on the even safer side, you can rig something up, too. It's probably not a good idea to rely on software to shut down your system in the event your thermals get too high. It doesn't take long for my system to go from 24 to 35 (Celsius), so by the time the software kicks in, the temps could still be shooting up. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

I agree 100% with what you say about hardware overtemp shutdown, in fact my BIOS has saved me twice. I also see what you are saying with the relay to sut off the aux power if the main goes down, however I don't think it's too pressing at the moment. In fact what I plan on doing is having a switch on the front panel to turn on the aux power with the system shut down. This will allow me to get the processor frozen before even starting up. Later down the road I might even build a custom timer, so when you turn the system on it turns on the aux then starts a coundown to allow the chip to become nice and frozen. no, sorry, i was thinking that you could put a relay on your system's PSU (maybe on the green wire?) to shut your system in the event your aux fails. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

Oh yea that's already going to be set up that way, the aux will turn on with the main PSU. That relay is actually included in Swiftech's kit. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Oh man, I just caught this thread but I see you have been advised in the right direction. I have heard and seen so many horror stories due to foam. Dielectric grease, closed cell foam or neoprene, and anti-frost gel are the way to go. Actually, I'm hoping to get my hands on a Phase unit shortly (if everything works out), and will get a chance to immunize my rig against frost also. | ||
