Default Liquid Phase Change Hybrid

I decided to post my interesting gizmo in the event someone else may like to give it a try.

Basicly, this is a Liquid Cooling system that uses a Dehumidifier Phase Changer to bring the temps of the coolant below freezing.

How I did this:

I happend to be running a liquid cooling system in my rig at the time, and was not pleased with the temps, even with a radiator and a 120mm fan.

I was tooting around in my work room looking for anything that I could use. I stumbled upon my Dehumidifer, which I bought about 3 weeks earlier, and only used twice. I decided to use the evaporator coil radiator to cool the coolant, the only problem, is that the foot wide radiator coils don't quite fit into a 5 1/4 inch resevoir.

After a nice poke around Canadian Tire, I got myself a 5 - 6 gallon storage container and 4 jugs of car radiator antifreeze.

I got home, drilled two holes into the new resevoir, and removed the old coolant from the lines. After attaching the coolant lines to the new resevoir, I poured in the Antifreeze, and added water to thin the mixture.

I since the way the dehumidifier has the two radiators "Evaporator" cold side, and the "Condensor" hot side, stacked together, I had to do some VERY VERY careful bending of the copper tubes so I could place the evaporator coils into the coolant.

For proper functioning of the Phase Changer, the Condensor needs a fan to cool it. I used the fan that comes with the dehumidifer, and bolted the condensor to the fan intake. Luckily, it was made to fit like that anyways

I started up the phase changer, and added a thermometer into the resevoir, after a couple of minutes, the temp of the coolant was dropping pretty fast. An hour later I came back, this is the cool part, There is not need of a thermometer to tell you that you are below freezing temp in the Coolant department

I started up my computer, and after getting into windows, I checked my CPU temp, ONLY 6 CELSIUS AT IDLE!!!!! And at full load, I only peak at 25 - 30 Celsius. *These temps are what I get when overclocked at 2.8 - 2.9 ghz on my X2 Dual Core 4200* . At stock speeds, my cpu temp actually went below freezing

For anyone who is going to try my gizmo-majig, GET INSULATION TAPE!!! The first time, I forgot to do so, and I ended up frying my Video Card after I shut my machine off

Place Insulation tape on all parts of the coolant lines, on the Pump, and on exposed parts of the waterblock.

Have fun trying this, it works sweetly and i love it *hugs Comp and Phase Change Gizmo-majig*

That is some pretty innovative thinking. Can you post some pictures of everything? Would be nice to see it all put together for better referance.

Once logitech helps me out with my cam, i will be more then glad to post the pics, along with my "monstrosity" project

I have some older pics of a slight mod of the phase changer and my old resevoir sitting ON the evaporator coils.

This is before the FULL mod of the Phase changer with my 6 gallon tank.

These are the pics I have on my MSN space, I wiped my HD of the a while ago >.>

This is the actual 30 pint dehumidifier, we can all thank Maytag for making such a great toy hehe

Here is the front of my original system

Here is a pic of my old little Resy sitting on the coils.

Temp of the Phase Changer Evaporator itself

I really hope my webcam gets working

I found a water cooler for 5 gal.bottled water and salvaged it guts.It has the coolest circular coil for cooling water.I am going to build same type of rig with it.Compressor ,condensor, fan are together in 10"by 10"area with 24" of tubing leading to cooling coil.It looks like ready made water chiller for water cooling.I will post pics when I get around to this build.Jo

Do us a Favor, Turn the camera on to movie mod and see if it survives. If it does you just made a cool movie

Hmm 250 Can For that? I think they go for axround 150 or so in the US. A Cheaper Alternative to Pelt Cooling too, or maybe it isnt, Since the cost of water cooling+Pelt+PSU may come out to the same amount.

Some good / Bad news

I had to re-install Win XP last night. Thanks to this marvelous POS, I only lostmy 2 gigs of music, but wasted about 8 hours. My desk is trashed, my floor is a disaster, and i think i lost some sanity too.. BUT, i got my Digital Cam, and I think may Web cam may work now. I have odd marks on my fist tho after beating my keyboard and desk XD

But anyways, i hope to be fully operational soon, and get my pics going in about 2 hours latest

Here are the pics i promised

This is the whole assembly, Resevoir, Phase Changer Compressor, and Cooling fan on top.

This is the Compressor, with a Capacitor and a nice mess of wires. No place to hide them lol

Green looking antifreeze, with the Evaporator radiator submerged, has a little bit of frost on the top, it wasn't sitting fully submerged.

A top view of the Compressor

Hope you enjoy them

Oh my goodness, That looks like fun! Recently, I have been growing more and more interested in phase change cooling, and not knowing much about it, this looks darn cool. Plus, I already have liquid cooling, but I would be worried about condensation.

I am sorry if you already answered this, I must have skipped over it, but you didn't cut any of the dehumidfyier's (sorry about spelling) pipes, did you?

This setup is EXTREMELY EASY!!! No need to cut any pipes Only problem is Condensation. To solve that, go get some Pipe Insulation tape. Its basicly just Foam tape. wrap it around your coolant lines. As an exstra safety precaution, I wraped the insulation tape with black electrical tape, it looks nice, and works well to hold the insulation tape on.

Right now, my temp is only 5 Celsius, I drilled out the tiny sprayer pegs in my Swiftech Waterblock, works sweetly, and man, this cooling setup is COLD! lol.

Need more help? Just ask

Cool!! * no pun intented * Are you building a Phase Change liquid hybrid like mine? or a real phase change cooled rig?

Either way, I will be glad to lend my Assistance

Lucky Bum on getting freebees hehehe
