Question Ink Jet technology to cool CPU?

This is a strange idea.......somebody must've had a good ol time with the crack rock to think this one up LOL.

Check it out here.

Actually I think Wixx was looking at something just like this awhile back but it requires very high water pressure and that becomes a little complicated. I have also looked at the idea of combining water misters like the ones used to cool bleachers and hot crowds at theme parks with water bong cooling. I will claim that concept for myself as I have not heard of anyone trying it. Course that also means I need to put a working bong together.

I had also read something about that recently. lc, about your misting bong concept, I've seen it done with high pressure showerheads before. The coolest application is where a guy used a garden fountain.

How it might work is:
*a compressor compresses R134a
*the R134a is condensed in a condenser
*the R134a is misted onto the inside of the CPU block using ink-jet technology
*as the R134a is boiled off, it cools the CPU
*the R134a is returned to the compressor to be used again

This is about 8x more effcient than peltiers.
So an 9 watt jet cooler is equal to a 72 watt peltier.

Welcome star882, excellent post as an introduction. I think you are going to have some questions from users on setting that up.

tiny fridge on a chip? wow that would be really hard. you have to make that big pressure difference. maybe like a tiny piezo compressor or something.

the only beer that would fit in there would be the beer for the hamster in the wheel that powers my cd-rom drive, if im gonna get that little guy up to 56x, he is gonna need some motivation!

if we could put a tiny fridge on a chip we could also fit a tiny brewery in there too. but the beer might be a little warm.

What's funny is that I no longer consider water cooling as extreme anymore. I am sure some of you other guys are the same way too.

I see extreme cooling starting at just below the temperature at which condensation begins, (the dew point). I know that it fluctuates, but if your getting anywhere near that and you have to insulate to protect from it, then that is where extreme begins for me.

The fun part is that there is a pretty good temperature range that can be taken advantage of between ambient, and the dew point. That is the temp range that needs to be exploited for some real performance by a reliable cooling system.

This is why I don't get too excited with talk of LN2 and Phase-Change systems because they fall into the extreme catagory.

Now if you can tell me of a realiable, compact means of dropping your water temp to 18 - 24C, then you got my attention

Well that's easy enough...just get one of those small top-loading freezers that most appliance places sell (always next to the mini-fridges!) and if you were simply going to watercool, keep the reservoir and pump in the freezer (or even a mini-fridge). But something tells me you could probably fit an entire tower in one of those (if not all the components).

Talk about cool ideas, I will have to talk with my father, he's a refrigeration engineer, designs fridges, and industrial air-cons and stuff, he designed and built a 24v/solar powered, stainless portable (like and esky) fridge/freezer a few years ago (until his business partner stole the design), and was selling it on the market in Australia, it was called the Drover.

This could be an interesting concept design for the future.....

But saying, using R134 refrigerant may be too unstable, for this application..... R22 is still used today, but must be reclaimed....
