| I have 3 80mm fans on my radiator, and im looking for as much silence as possible at certain times.(Sleep and such) So my question is if i unplugged these fans is it gonna reduce the performance of my radiator that I will have to worry about temps. I wouldn't think so but I'm just checking. | ||

I would have thought it would have a bad effect on temps, otherwise everybody would be using rads without fans. If you mount the rad horizontally rather than vertically, convection might let you might get away with it, but I doubt it. You'll just have to try it & see.

I wouldn't be max loading the cpu or anything. It would just be idle while downloading random things. My rad is mounted above all my other components ATM and my room temp is about 70 or so. I hope it won't cause any condensation.

| I tried it once. However my heater core is probably a lot bigger than your rad, if your using 80mm fans. My temps rose about 15*C to somwhere near 56*C and stayed there for an hour or so. I have an 80mm fan blowing onto my vid card, so I guess it was still gettting some circulation. See rads are designed to have air passed through them. If you made a copper block that was channeled so water could pass through it, and then added fins to it, someing like a conventional heatsink, then it may work. But working with a regular rad is probably not the best idea. | ||

My radiator is quite larger than most. Screw it im gonna rip my rig apart to get to the 3 fans and try it. I know my northy can stick it out idle in the 50's. Also I have a resivoir which may help a little bit.

The res won't do jack if the loop has hit equilibrium at that point. Id just undervolt the fans, easiest way to keep your EXPENSIVE components from frying.

| Well with the 3 fans unplugged I booted into linux. My temp monitor shows 44-45 degrres stable while downloading 2 ISO's(1 of Fedora and 1 of a trial version of the latest build of Longhorn, its legal I have a MSDN subscription ) My room temp is almost always 70-71 degrees. I'm not noticing any condensation on the radiator which good seeing how it sits above everything else. Well its been almost 45 minutes and everything looking A OK! ![]() EDIT: Oh and here is a pic of my radiator. ![]() | ||

| Condensation??? I've got a large dual 2x120mm HC and I could turn the fans off while watching a movie or something but afterwards it would be in the 50's and the tubing was hot to the touch so I never left it overnight. Radiators aren't designed for passive cooling so I'd be careful if I were you especially with all the components you're cooling. | ||

| If theres no air moving through the radiator, it will end up superheating the small amount of air thats trapped in it, and you'll overheat. The radiator depends on a constant flow of air for it to transfer heat to. If the air isnt moving, the heat is all transfered to the same air, which goes nowhere and the heat stays in the radiator. That being said, I thought i saw a review of a convection radiator for a pc somewhere. | ||

| Well its been like 14 hours or so I think and the 3 fans are still unplugged. The temps havent risen at all and when I first came back to my PC they had actually dropped. I already have a fan controller but it doesnt slow em down enough for my taste. This works fine the way I have it set up now. | ||

| I use a BlackIce Extreme II, which is a fatty dual 120mm radiator. I use an unusual setup of crossflow blowers to move air through the radiator. I decided to see the effect of switching off the fans. Well, I totally forgot about it after getting side-tracked. I came back after several hours later and sat down at my desk and thought, damn it's kinda extra quiet. I remembered then that I unplugged the fans. I didn't have any apps running, so not much demand. The reservoir felt much warmer to the touch, but it wasn't anything crazy. Now, I'm running the system with only 1 fan to reduce noise and the system is still effective enough under full load. | ||
