Default Do water pumps need their own psu?

I thought these pumps consumed something like 10w of power? Wouldn't a 480w+ psu be enough to run the pump as well?

Easily. typical is around 5-20watts for 12V DCpumps. Run it easily no problem.

what would you do to the plug to plug it into the power supply? since i got a 550 watt might as well make my pump run off of it so its one less wire coming out. guess i wouldn't need a relay switch either if i did that.

You would need a 12v pump. They simply hook up like a fan or a hard drive.

Don't water cool but know my motors. Just a warning if you use a pump not really sold for computer use - they can mess with your rails real bad (example is those Johnson pumps) unless you add a cap to the wiring to clean it up.

That is true.

I was refering to the multitude of 12V water cooling pumps that have appeared in the past 6 months.
There are 5 or 6 now.

Yah - but I figured all based should be covered with how a lot of people go out of the mainstream for cost savings.

Right on Bro, tried to give you another boost but the stupid rep deal said no. Anyways he is right on, they will screw with your rails.

So why do some people insist on separate power sources for pumps? strange....
You could put a small cap between the motor terminals and if possible from each terminal to the metal case of the motor, that supresses any back emf. You do this with electric r/c planes, cars etc

I use a seperate PSU because everything is external and I don't need any more wires running in my case. This doesn't justify everyone else though, however another reason would be so that when you turn off your computer the pump keeps pumping, cooling the processor down quite a bit.

i no some pumps do require their own power, and custom built setups use the pond pumps that use mains connectivity, but almost all case assembled pumps need 12v - id recomend u try to put it on its own 12v line instead of hooking it to other drives to save any power drainage on 1 single line.

The pump I bought came with its own PSU. http://www.criticool.com/images%20sm...assoneheim.jpg
