Default More probelems w/ Swiftech

Well, my MCP300 pump from Swiftech went off to be with Jesus today. It just decided to stop working.

So I opened it up to have looks see at what was going on...

And the plastic that isolates the impeller from the rest of the motor was cracked!

This pump is only about 9 months old, and the coolant was replaced every three months. (15% Antifreeze 85% Distilled water.)

So I had to go buy a Danner Mag, not because I want one-I just need my computer to work by tomorrow and pets mart is close, I have yet to try it...

hopefully it will be a good pump, I'm very picky as far as noise, so I'm worried I'm gonna have to sell the damn thing and get a Ehiem in the future. (Isn't that a Jewish name?)

Its done between me and Swiftech.

Danger Den, you have a new customer!

Ain't nothing wrong with a DannerMag pump. Myself, Putwig, Zennzzo, BA and others have all had a good experience with Danner pumps. I've got a DM2 on my main rig and can't hear it over my case fans, it's relatively quiet.

I was thinking of mounting it in an ammo box if it turns out to be a loud mouth.

Now that I know you own one, I feel much more reassured in purchasing it.

Guess its a keeper!

As soon as you get it, seal the impeller housing with Plumber's goop (or some such goop). The impeller housing will leak if you don't ........ maybe not right away, but it will leak at some point. Just seal right off the bat, and you won't have to worry about it.

Other than that, great pumps! They are my first choice.

As for quiet, rubber mount it and insulate with some high density foam. You won't hear it.

Would jb-weld work? That and silicone grease is all I have presently.

It seems to have a somewhat flimsy/dinky gasket between the impeller housing and the rest of the pump, so I can see that becoming and issue in the future.

Thanks

JB weld is too much. youll never get it off for service. there are only 8 parts total and 4 of those are screws.
Right where the O-ring is is where they leak. From between the pump housing and motor. Like Putwig said, get some clear silicone and put a light coat on the mating surfaces. I put some in the screw holes too. Clear silicon is cheap, few bux is all.
When you go to tighten it down, do it in a cris-cross pattern evenly and do not overtighten. I think that alot of leaks are due to overtightening and distorting the housing.
If ya got an old thick mouse pad, cut a small mat for it to sit on and it'll be quieter than the case fanz.

Help! Its making this crackly sound! I shook it quite a lot, so I don't *think* there are any bubbles in it.

I guess I need to get a Eheim pump

Yes there is air in the system...the impeller is mounted on the end of the shaft with a bit of play. This way if there is water against the impeller, the motor can get a bit of a running start.
When you have air trapped in there, the impeller slaps against the slack, when it get's to an airpocket.
Just make sure that there is plenty of head to the center of the pump on the end and the one sticking upward is the outlet should let the air out.
Are you running a reservoir BTW? What Danner did ya get?

-Okay, no there is no res in my system currently. (Damn you Swiftech!)

-I got the model 2 -the 250GPH model

-There is not much head, I guess-what can be considered plenty?

-Also, another thing I noticed (now that the system is up and running) is that there is a bubble - about 1/2 in length that escapes from the pump when it is powered down, so I guess you are right.

So I guess I have to take it apart and reseal it. It takes a lot for me to loose my patience, but I'm getting very close Zen. . .

Thanks for the help.

If you sealed it properly, there is no need to reseal it. You just have to prime it better.

Sounds like an AK47 if not full of water.

Don't it though?!.
When I found out about the slack to prevent water hammer, I was impressed...almost as much as when I found out they (danners) will run in either direction, that's why the outlet is straight out the top, centered above the intake...

Well I'm getting plenty of flow out the other end. Thank God I don't have to open that thing again. I'll prime it again tomorrow.

I think its time for a res.

Do not run it while making that racket, you will trash the impeller.

Problem solved! I resealed everything and did a better job filling the system.

Thanks everyone, I added to all of your reputations.
