Default AAAAh Water!

Just some musings.

In anticipation of my GF4 4200 (if it doesn't come tomorrow I will have a sroke!), I decided to turn all my settings back to default and run some benches etc, so I could tell how much performance boost I got from just switching out the video cards.

I had never run my system water cooled at stock speeds so it was quite an eyeopener!

I now have:
Athlon t-bird 1.2 (12x100) vcore at 1.70
GF2 ti (at stock speed 250/400)
kt133a mobo
512 of mushkin rev 2 pc133

With fans on full:

CPU: 28 idle 31 load Case: 26

Same set-up with the generic "amd approved" HSF ran:

CPU: 48 idle 57 load

Observation # 1 - WATER ROCKS this data just really drives home how very efficient water cooling is! That is a 26 degree decrease in load temps and the system is quieter!

My other observation just really drove home how much extra heat we generate by overclocking!

The exact hardware configuration above but with oc:

proc now at 1440 MHz (10.5 x 137) and vcore 1.85
videocard now at 265/450

Fans still on full:

CPU: 33 idle 38 load Case: 29

A simple system FSB increase of 37 and a vcore increase of 0.15
and a decent videocard oc......were sufficient to raise case temps 3 degrees and overwhelm my very efficient water rig to the tune of 5 degrees at load!

Observation #2 - Overclocking Raises Temps! This is of course common sence to all of us. But I don't think I have ever sat down and really looked at the numbers!

Any how, nothing new here. I was just reminded of why we do what we do, and thought I would share.

Just imagine what your OC temps would look like with the AMD stock cooling on it. Or rather, what your OC temps would smell like.

no kidding it's hot, with my current system my room is about 10*F hotter than the rest of my house just because of my new rig.

i just realized this last night, my comp is a microcosm of my room:

Comp: i have intake fans exhaust fans and a fan on the graphics card.

Room: I have an intake fan, exhaust fan and a fan on my ceiling.

it's crazy man!
