Default Analog Input: Cannot display this video mode.

My brother has a Dell and after leaving it on standbye for a bit (a long weekend maybe?) he got this error when he tried to get on: Analog Input: Cannot display this video mode.
He contacted Dell support and they thought it was a monitor problem, so they shipped him a new one. However, when he logs on in Safe Mode, everything works fine. But, he can't change his refresh rate or anything. Any ideas?

What make/model of Dell does your brother have? i.e. Optiplex, Dimension, etc.
Also, which model number for the monitor as well.

Edit: I just found this link as well. Documentation

The error message displayed tends to be a resolution or frequency setting higher than the monitor can handle. So it gives you a message stating it cannot display this video mode/resolution.

This is what i would try.......
Boot into safe mode and remove the display drivers. This should kill the settings and allow the system to be booted with generic vga drivers until the video card drivers can be installed again in normal mode.

See if this helps......

@godfoot - I saw that already and it didn't help.

@Rockin' male - I'll have him give that a try and get back to you.

When he tries to click properties under his monitor settings, it won't let him select the properties to get at the drivers to uninstall them. By the way, this would be for the monitor, not the video card, right?

I'm sure that was it. He just decided to buy a new video card that could have dual monitors and that fixed the issue. Thanks though.
