Blue Line on Going Down LCD

I have a laptop I am trying to fix that has a single blue line going down its middle on its LCD. I would normally consider this a software issue, but the line only shows up on the desktop and not when a program is running, leading me to believe the issue is software-based.

The laptop is an IBM Thinkpad with these specs: Pentium M 1.8 Ghz/512 MB RAM/14.1 inch LCD/ Intel 845g integrated graphics. It is running Windows XP Pro.

I installed the latest graphics drivers, but it didn't fix a thing. What should be my next course of action in fixing this problem? Like I said before, I think this problem isn't hardware-based because it only happens on the Windows desktop.

if the line shows only in the desktop and not while running programs ...
it could be that a pixel line of either blue or green went out ....
(most apps. have a background that requires red+blue or red+green )
but if the line shows up even while booting up and/or goes across the Start menu bar ...
then i think your screen went bad ...

another approach would be to
test your screen against possible dead pixels ...

A classmate of mine has a Dell XPS that has a red line down the entire screen. He says it just happened one day and it stuck. I have no experience with this personally, but I would try a live cd boot into Ubuntu or something and if the problem still exists I would post here

Sorry I can't help you more but if you do come about a solution I'd be interested in hearing it. Good luck, but you may have to live with it.
