Question Looking for a Good (and Cheap) DVD Burner

Alright, I don't usually go out asking for suggestions and usually do my own homework, but I'm out of my league here. I now have around $50-$70 that I can spare to the cause of a dvd burner. I'd love to have light-scribe and dual-layer support, but they aren't requirements...

(I'll wait exactly 30 minutes for T2 or PD)

I swear by NEC, I got my gf a dual layer +/- 16x one from tigerdirect.com for $39.99

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...6&image12.y=12

I honestly think that light scribe is a bunch o' crap...

f.y.i
(that NEC drive is 6x DL writing, the sony is 8x DL writing.)

w00t three bars!!! I only wonder how long until I get a title, like "P'Hoe'nix" cause of my case or perhaps "Mac Man" or "Mac Addict" cause I seem to be the sites knowlegable person in the realm of OSX

Anywho, I've had great experience with NEC, very very few coasters burned, and still working strong after 4 years (6 for my CD-rw by NEC)

**DL, meaning dual layer, are sooooooo expensive $30 for a 10pack***

*edit* the DL write speeds are the same both are 6x for DL DVD-R and 8x for DL DVD+R

Wow guys! Muchas Gracias to all! I did not expect to see this many posts this quickly! And the comparisons...very nice...I like...+reps for all (unless it won't let me)

From what I've heard, most media isn't 8x DL certified making the sony's high rating kinda moot (although feel free to correct me)

correct, most media is 2.4x DL speed, there is about as much 4x as there is 8x media.

ps-
Thanx for the rep, much appreciated.

The Sony is 8x for both - &+. Hence the ± symbol.

Actually, since you say you own several of those drives, have you ever encountered any length (or depth) issues with them? I believe there is an issue with my case or mobo where long drives may hit a capacitor...

NEC, drives seem to last forever.
Plextor,also makes a good one.
LG, I'm very impressed with.( has outlasted all my others)
Sony, I've had plenty issues with, and will never buy nor recommend another one.

Depending on where you live, I've had good luck with the OEM Samsung Dual Layer 16x drive I've gotten from micro center, I have 3 and they have all held well with no problems and come with a free version of Nero although they are OEM.

Oh BTW, I forgot to mention they are 39.99

I've been reasonably satisfied with my NEC's hardware, but was amazed to find that the OEM-packed version of the 3520A I got from Newegg about a year ago doesn't come with *anything* but a plastic bubble bag. Not even a trialware app-- I'm intrigued that even an OEM buying 5,000 drives wouldn't want a licence for something that burns DVDs included (cos XP doesn't on its own, right?)

Hah, T2 responds only after I just finish ordering! I decided to go with Dreyco's suggestion, it's $30 after a $20 rebate. Everyone's love of NEC products sure helped too!
