The closest one I am willing to drive to that would be closing is over 30 miles away. Nothing in a radio shack is worth driving 30 miles for. Hopefully some of you other guys will luck out. Thanks for the heads up though.

As Ive said, everything is over priced. 2 Blue LEDs cost 2.something. I only go there if I need something in an emergency. However, when I did get started in electronics thats were I got my books from (they dont have them anymore) and most of my parts. Waterbury Electronics wasnt any better, only a couple cents cheaper for stuff.

For a few years, there was a huge RadioShack locally, they sent out a monthly or so catalogue and it was more of an electronics-parts-shop than a 'buy-a-cell-phone' shop. I got my shortwave-radio kit from there, a 120mm fan which is now defunct, and other project parts. Supposedly they had three shops like it in the entire nation and it went belly up ages ago. I bought a small analogue ammeter at 70 percent off when they closed.

Amusingly, two blocks down, there was a hole-in-the-wall electronics parts shop that survived the entire experience. I get my LEDs there now, at $1.50 for a bag of 100 regular ones, or like 75 cents for single superbrights.

The one down the street from me is closing. I happened to get a few good deals on things such as a new mag light, wire strippers, these re-usable rubber zip ties, as well as some l.e.d. holders. Some stuff was still way over priced, but I came out ahead on this one.

I went there just the other day to buy a capacitor. I know they keep them in the drawers but this guy comes up to me and offers his help. I tell'em I need a 4800uf capacitor. He walks around clueless for like 5 minutes then asks his coworker where they are.
RS isn't what it used to be. All they do now is sell stupid little cars and cell phones. Oh and in Rhode Island we had to give ALL our info (name, addy, phone) every single time we shopped up until like a few years ago. Did they do that in any other state?

My RS back home always wanted name, address, phone number and so on everytime I went there. The RS here where my college is never ask any of that stuff.

Yea they do that too. Some time ago they sent my father a bill for something he never bought.

Dollarstores and walmart may be to blame, or the fact that jobs are going over seas. All of those (probably more) may have contributed to it.

Click on the link, put in your zip code, and IF any stores are closing, there will be a red flag with a white $ next to the address of the store. Hope this helps.
