What I have:

Shuttle AK35 series board - dont know much about it - has onboard sound but no onbaord video or lan, see pictures

AMD XP1800 - dont know stepping or any other info, has TT volcano 6 cooler on it

256 MB RAM - DDR 266 MHZ, dont have any other info

Excelstor 40 gb hard drive

ARTEC 32x CD burner

nVIDIA RIVA TNT2 M64 gfx card with 32 mb RAM

floppy drive

cheap ass power supply - dont have specs, dont care you should use it anyways just mentioning it cause some anal retentive putz will ask questions about it and I dont wanna have to answer them later

The Catch:

This machine has unknow problem. Sometimes it will hang at Verifying DMI Pool at the POST. Sometimes it will restart itself 8 to 10 times while loading XP. Sometimes it will load XP just fine, run for a time (ranging from 10 mins to 10 days) and then restart itself and start all over again.

I have:
unplugged all drives but HD and that doesnt affect it
checked hard drive in other machine for problems - passes diagonostics with an A-OK
tried fresh install of XP - no change

After doing the above (didnt have spare PSU or RAM to try) I called the owner to let her know what was going on and see what she wanted to do. She said to throw the piece of **** away and build her a new one.


What I Want:


I have taken NOTHING out of this system - it goes all to one person. Dont ask, as of now I will NOT bother with parting it out, at the price Im asking its not worth my time to ship to half a dozen people. I will be keeping the case as it would be to costly to ship anyways and its the only piece I can use reasonably in a new customer build with some assurance of it not causing further problems. You can have the PSU if you want it - I have no use for it and suspect it may play a big part in the problem anyways.

All I want for the whole thing is an ThermalRight XP-90, 92 mm fan and some thermal compound. I dont care if the XP90 is new as long as it works OK and contains the necessary brackets for P4 use. The fan must be new and not an extremely cheap POS.......I am going for cooling not for low noise so more CFM the better. Thermal compound must be of performance nature but non conductive. I also expect to SPLIT the shipping and handling. It will be shipped VIA UPS. If you want to send cash instead of items go to Newegg, price the above stuff and I will accept the exact amount shipped to my address (ask for via PM or email).

If this doesnt sell I may part it out and repost it or I may throw it in the trash - just depends. No if I dont sell it you cannot just have it but I may post pictures of my shooting it with a .45 if that tickles your fancy (it does mine ).

hmm quite the interesting system there, hmm that .45 would come in handy for that modem not to add insult to injury, but has a bios flash been done on it?

if it is having a hard time Doing the DMI and it resets all by its self , there might, might, be a bad chip on the board or a bad block of ram, which IMO would render it .45 worthy,

i have come across that DMI hang issue so many times , working on other rigs, some rather older than me that i just chalk it up to a bad board, or ram........ if anything.......

NOTE: just noted that it is a VIA chipset, any idea what model? if it is the KT model, than id be expecting issues

I believe the problem is a bad motherboard or BIOS issue and replacing the mobo would solve the problem. I have 5 computer myself and dont need another and I dont need another project rig at the time......too much to do right now.

It is a KT series chipset, I remember that from looking for drivers for the audio........I dont really care if it could be fixed easily - if so good for the next person.

Hmmmm... Well, technology-wise, it definately looks kinda old.. You'd probably get the best ( cash value) deal parting it out. But the with the .45 option, you'd definately be getting sweet rep from all around ( pc sacrifices can seem quite darring, thus, turning heads and getting PR community attention).. Tough choice, maybe you should give it to GK for his birthday eh?

This is some funny **** but I even figured out what was wrong with it........the modem.

I took the modem out of this machine and stuck it in my "loaner" PC to take to the customer to use while hers was being built. Upon starting the machine with the modem in it it would beep like a mad bastard and fail to run - remove the modem and it was fine. Odd

Built her new PC and put the modem in there just to see what it would do. System unstability, computer restarting, freezing etc - the computer had run for 24 hours just fine prior to adding the modem and runs just fine with a new modem...........apparently it went bad in a way that caused this. Kinda odd unless its power related.

No guarantee but I think ZerOs just bought a perfectly running system for $80 - just add case.

Reminds me of when I picked up my Radeon 9600 Pro for 50 dollars at MarketPro when it was a 130 dollar card

On another note. I am 95% finished with my current case mod. And i replaced my Vantec 92mm tornado fan with a Enermax 92mm fan. I can hear myseld think again.
