Don't know if they can be had for under $250 but I'm running one of the Ultra x3 1000W power supplies and have nothing bad to say about it. So far seems nice and stable, My Fluke dmm shows it to be on voltage. It's nice that it's modular and the cables are easy enough to route. I have it in my system running,

q6600 on an evga 780I
8800gt x2 sli
2x 1gig ocz reapers @1066mhz
razer sound card, with surround headphones
ati hdtv tuner
3x sata hard disks
sata blu-ray/hd-dvd combo player
ide dvd burner
and the standard collection of 5 fans, lights, floppy drive, card reader, logitech g-15, joystick.

Seriously, make sure you get a top notch PSU and get one that has a single 12v rail.

Has hell frozen over as the DEAL MASTER is looking for help with a DEAL?

ADD: PC Power and Cooling is owned by OCZ, so I assume that they go through the same manufacturing process.

I was more referring to the fact that a more pristine name goes through quite a bit more quality control checks during the manufacturing process. Compare any fruit you like, but it is true with almost every product.

While that is true, it does not mean they are the same. If they were they would be identical. PC Power & Cooling still has their own design and mfg process, as well as the name recognition. If OCZ had only started selling PSUs *after* they bought PCP&C I would be more of a mind to agree with you, but they started selling them more than a year prior to the purchase.

When OCZ started selling PSUs they simple re-badged a PSU that someone else designed and manufactured (just like Corsair and several other companies do). They did not design it from the ground up and have it built to spec like PCP&C does.

I have a PCP&C 750w PSU and to say it is rock solid is like saying Mt Everest is tall. I don't think I could cause this thing to fail if I tried. So I stand by my initial recommendation, do not skimp on your power supply, it is the single most important part of your PC (and you should know this Thrasher!). Without it, you got nothing. To use the car analogy, if the CPU is your engine, then the PSU is the fuel system. Without it, you don't go anywhere.

Well said, if i had any reppable points, i most certainly would, as this is the exact point i was trying to make.

What is best? Because I have had nothing pass a 850watt PSU before

+12V Rails: Single
+12V Rails: 4
+12V Rails: 6

The multiple rails came out of the Intel spec for the ATX 2.2-2.3 compliance. I don't think Intel conferred with either Nvidia or ATI before they set them down. No one could have foreseen the obscene amount of power video cards would be sucking up.

Multiple rails are not really a bad idea, the way most are implemented is. The basic idea is to isolate multiple cpus and gpus and other components so one does not affect the stability of the others. Unfortunately this approach doesn't always have enough power available on a single rail for a given device ...giant power sucking video cards for example.

With modern components anything under 750 or 800 Watts rating can choke with multiple rails. Even though it has enough total power, it is split in a way it can't access enough for a given component.

1000 Watt psu's seldom have this problem. Enermax actually goes a step further and rather than just split the current, they use two completely separate transformers to provide two distinct 12V rails. The Galaxy DXX has 5 rails total.

Anything around 500 to 750 Watts should have no more than 3 rails. 850 to 1000 Watts no more than 5.

The concept of a single rail is better than multiple rails comes from two places. One, the PC Power and Cooling model which has a rock solid single rail always has the full potential available for every component. It just works and you don't have to think about how to split the power. And two, people who have used borderline psu's that fail with a SLI set-up were using psu's designed before the advent of multiple power sucking video cards or simply underestimated the power needed. That and SLI certification was handed out like candy on Halloween.

How the rails are divided is as important as how many. You'll want at least 16 amps on every 12V rail. SilverStone has a unique concept that allows you to turn off the multiple rails and use a the psu as a single rail system.

Multi rail = 16-17 amps available to a given component.
Single rail = 80 amps available to a given component.

AntiM summed it up quite nicely, and he is 110% right that if you go for a PSU with multiple rails think long and hard on how you are going to use that PSU and what you will connect to which rail.

The problem I have seen with multi-rail PSUs is that the connectors they give you on a particular rail are not always what you need, and this can make wiring problematic. Add to it that most (at least the ones I have seen) don't really identify which rail is for which set of cables and you can see why I suggest the PCP&C single rail PSU. Silverstone also makes some very good single rail PSUs from what I have heard.
