Default Dremel Killa

That should be my name. I killed another one today, it was a great show, black smoke, flames, and all. Also followed by lots of cursing, dirt kicking (it was still flaming), and a half finished job. Now see the first time I killed a dremel I thought it was kinda cool, 2nd time, it was another badge of honor... this is the 4th time in 4 years I've killed one. I'm sick of it. Also before someone suggests another maker, I've killed a Black and Decker unit in the first 10 minutes, and burned out the speed control on a Craftsman branded unit in a week.

Folks - I killed this last Dremel (a 400 series XPR) with less than a few hours total running time. I was using regular reinforced cutting discs, wasn't over working it either. It just shot the bearing out it seems and the windings shorted and caused the varnish to burn. My jig-saw chokes on this material I'm cutting regardless of the blade I use, my die grinder.. well that's like using a cannon to kill a mosquito. I'm nearing my wits end. What most of us consider our faithful modding back-up just isn't as faithful as the legends suggest I think.

Dremel - okay at everything, good at nothing. Really I know that seems harsh but it's true really. With the assortment of attachments it can do just about anything, but between how it's substandard performance compared to the "right tool"... I'm just really unsure if I should buy another with the luck I'm having. So tonight I sit and ponder - should I get another dremel, or get a nice new orbital/scroll jigsaw that can take my treadplate working?

Things I've broke:

1 Impact
2 Air ratchets
1 3/4" ratchet
5 1/2" ratchets
countless sockets and wrenches
4 Dremels (2 misc. other rotary tools too)
1 Roto-Zip rotary tool
2 Hammers (that weren't hit on the handle)
1 maul
2 axe/mauls
3 bottle jacks...
1 Hacksaw (and lord knows how many blades I've snapped even properly tensioned)

I'll amend as I remember more.

later, you should put a dremel icon for each of the dremels you killed on your avatar, kinda like a notch on the belt.

Is it possible that you're just pushing down too hard on it? Took me a loooong time to learn that with a Dremel, you have to be patient and let the tool do all the work. Put too much pressure on it, and that motor will get damned hot in a hurry. Push it too far, and you've just bricked another tool.
Sucks, though I can feel your pain

Yep - I'm sure. I bought an older style 300 series today. They last longer than the 400 series IMO.

Actually, I just saw an article (Can't remember where) on a non volital liquid that will drop temps below ambients!

Problem is it's priced something like 300~500$ a gallon...

could this be an abusive personality rearin' its ulgy head

I've actually found that the " old school " dreamels hold up WAY BETTER then the new breed out today , you should try to hunt an older one down on e-bay or a swap meet.

Not curse related, got rid of that almost a year ago. No no - this is just me toasting tools.

ADD: WD40 + cut off wheels + diamondplate = TEH WIN! I cut out a 9" hole for my top view window and only used one disc.
