| Last week, we talked about how the times we spend with our loved ones, and the memories we have of those times are much like the data and files we save on our hard drives... Well, kinda, right? I had to work around my work schedule to get my computer back up and running, but I finally got it done. The OS, the drivers, the tweaks here and there that I had in place before the crash. Just about everything is back in place, except for the data I lost. That's the easy part, and the "good" news... All the data I lost was not ALL lost, though... I still had a lot of the data saved on another hard drive, the one I was using before I went to a RAID 0 setup... So like 90% of my music files were still there. The other 10% I still have as well, burned to CDs that I keep in my car to "bump the thump" on my way in to work... The pictures I had saved, at least the IMPORTANT ones, I had shared with my wife over our little home network, so she was able to share them back, and the ones she no longer had on her computer, she gave me the link for the online galleries that she shares with family and friends... The documents that were purely mine, those are lost forever, but I'm not shedding any tears for. The really important ones, the ones I have to have for work... Those I had somehow managed to save to my 1GB flash drive, so they're still among us... Bottom line, as far as my data and documents go, I was able to recover about 95%-99% of all the stuff I lost in the crash... That's the AWESOME news... On to the family moments, now that all that is taken care of... My parents came up to visit for a day or so, during their grand tour of family friends and relatives. They brought me a table and chairs set that they've had since before I was born. This table and chairs set has seen a lot of action, a lot of moves, and as such, holds a lot of memories for me (if not for my parents and siblings). The upholstery has been changed out of necessity (imagine a 35+ year old set of table and chairs, and the abuses three children put them through). The rest of the dining room set, a china cabinet and serving buffet, well, they couldn't fit them in the minivan with them, but those are promised to me officially/unofficially. Then my dad told me something that got my attention: if I ever feel like I need to dispose of any of them, they won't mind. I'm sorry, but I couldn't see myself getting rid of them anytime soon... Too many memories in the grain of that wood... So, today, my parents and I are going to spend the day with my daughter, maximizing her time with them... I'll confess I'm a bit jealous, I can't remember a whole lot about my grandparents. Towards the end, I have a couple memories here and there, but they fade with the years... That's why I have a 512MB flash card ready in my camera, and a brand-new set of batteries in... I hope I don't miss any of the moments for her today... | ||
