AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch pedophiles are launching a political party to push for a cut in the legal age for sexual relations to 12 from 16 and the legalization of child pornography and sex with animals, sparking widespread outrage.

The Charity, Freedom and Diversity (NVD) party said on its Web site it would be officially registered Wednesday, proclaiming: "We are going to shake The Hague awake!"

The party said it wanted to cut the legal age for sexual relations to 12 and eventually scrap the limit altogether.

"A ban just makes children curious," Ad van den Berg, one of the party's founders, told the Algemeen Dagblad (AD) newspaper.

"We want to make pedophilia the subject of discussion," he said, adding the subject had been a taboo since the 1996 Marc Dutroux child abuse scandal in neighboring Belgium.

"We want to get into parliament so we have a voice. Other politicians only talk about us in a negative sense, as if we were criminals," Van den Berg told Reuters.

The Netherlands, which already has liberal policies on soft drugs, prostitution and gay marriage, was shocked by the plan.

An opinion poll published Tuesday showed that 82 percent wanted the government to do something to stop the new party, while 67 percent said promoting pedophilia should be illegal.

"They make out as if they want more rights for children. But their position that children should be allowed sexual contact from age 12 is of course just in their own interest," anti-pedophile campaigner Ireen van Engelen told the AD daily.

Right-wing lawmaker Geert Wilders said he had asked the government to investigate whether a party with such "sick ideas" could really be established, ANP news agency reported.

Kees van deer Staaij, a member of the Christian SGP party, also demanded action: "Pedophilia and child pornography should be taboo in every constitutional state. Breaking that will just create more victims and more serious ones."

The party wants private possession of child pornography to be allowed although it supports the ban on the trade of such materials. It also supports allowing pornography to be broadcast on daytime television, with only violent pornography limited to the late evening.

Toddlers should be given sex education and youths aged 16 and up should be allowed to appear in pornographic films and prostitute themselves. Sex with animals should be allowed although abuse of animals should remain illegal, the NVD said.

The party also said everybody should be allowed to go naked in public and promotes legalizing all soft and hard drugs and free train travel for all.

DEAR GOD!!! WTF!!!

And how is it that these (insert the most repugnant adjective you can think of) and NAMBLA think it is even acceptable for their voices to be heard in public, much less in any type of government?

My vote for the most OBVIOUS quote of the century is: "Other politicians only talk about us in a negative sense, as if we were criminals"

But on the otherhand... makes tracking this scum easier.

Easier to track = easier to shoot.... um, arrest. Yeah arrest... that's the ticket.

Obviously these nutjobs haven't heard of the Convention on the Rights of the Child...

Quote:
The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights—civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special convention just for them because people under 18 years old often need special care and protection that adults do not. The leaders also wanted to make sure that the world recognized that children have human rights too.
The Convention sets out these rights in 54 articles and two Optional Protocols. It spells out the basic human rights that children everywhere have: the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life. The four core principles of the Convention are non-discrimination; devotion to the best interests of the child; the right to life, survival and development; and respect for the views of the child. Every right spelled out in the Convention is inherent to the human dignity and harmonious development of every child. The Convention protects children's rights by setting standards in health care; education; and legal, civil and social services.
By agreeing to undertake the obligations of the Convention (by ratifying or acceding to it), national governments have committed themselves to protecting and ensuring children's rights and they have agreed to hold themselves accountable for this commitment before the international community. States parties to the Convention are obliged to develop and undertake all actions and policies in the light of the best interests of the child.

BTW, anyone think about what PETA would do to these nimrods?

It's pretty obvious that they will never win in any election nor push their political agenda beyond the formation of a political party. What disturbs me right now is this: they know they'll never win, yet they formed the party anyway.

What this might be is an attempt to create some sort of legal umbrella to protect members of that party from prosecution/persecution through some sort of legal loophole in the Dutch system.

Hopefully I'm wrong and they won't get anything but some parent's foot up their ass.

Read the last paragraph:
Quote:

That last bit is so out of context, "free train travel for all"?

And also wanting to legalize sex with animals but ban animal abuse, what's the difference? How does one know when sex is consensual between a human being and a sheep for example?

Question 18 is arbitrary

If we could stop screaming OMGWTF for just a moment, there is an actual political point here.

Politically, 12 is not such an outrageous number. It was in fact the legal limit in the US for many years pre-Civil War. Except Delaware. Delaware was 7 - no wonder so many corporations form there.

18 is no magic number. Does anyone really want to pretend that a woman 17 years, 364 days old is absolutely sacrosanct no-thinking-randy-thoughts-about-her or youre a lawbreaker and that the next day it is perfectly legal for her to have sex with 600 men on national TV?

The reason the law is 18 years, zero hours, zero minutes, zero seconds and not one second before is because it's EASY. It's a fine clear line that's easy for law enforcement, juries, judges, prosecutors and everybody else. No administering maturity tests and licensing and fake licenses. No discrimination lawsuits by midgets if we had chosen a height requirement.

Now if the entirity of the NVD political party fell off a dyke [no laughing] and drowned, it wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit. But let's at least recognize that the legal age in the Netherlands is SIXTEEN not 18 as in the US.

There are moral issues here. There are mental health issues. There are political issues.

But I think we can at least agree that 18 is arbitrary and that political debate is healthy.

And for the record, I think 35 is a much better number.

@MF:

You're right some people are mature enough to deal with the things that are involved in a sexual relationship but if the law would decree that the age of consent should not be general but should rather be decided on each individual, it would in most cases not work. Some countries have a lower age of consent with some restrictions, for example:
Quote:
In Canada consensual activity with those over 12 may not be an offence if the accused is under 16 and less than two years older than the complainant.

I think most people agree on that a open-minded discussion of age of consent laws are harmless but that's not the only thing those "politicians" were on about. They wanted to reduce it 12 years and later on get rid of the law altogether.

Good points there Funki, but you also have to remember that at 35 at the end of the 19th century, you and I were almost dead (avg. lifespan = 37) and in the early 20th century, that jumped to 50. So in light of that context, younger marriage and reproduction is not entirely out of the ordinary or unreasonable.

And yes, 18 is an arbitrary number, as is 16 for that matter, but the bottom line is that unless you pick some number, there would be no way to prosecute those sickos who say that 9 is a good age.

Political debate IS healty, as is freedom of speech, yet one has to wonder what the motivation is to do start this party.

So that would force everyone else to be as prude as you already are? Ouch, Burn'd.

I'm mixed on this issue, since they (pedophiles) can't help who they are attracted to. It's seems to be understood that a born homosexual can't help but like others of the same sex, and can't be convinced to change who they are sexually attracted to. But since young boys aren't often attracted to creepy old men that are attracted to them, it leads to exploitation and kidnapping. So...I'll withhold my ability to start calling OMGWTFBBQ.

[Mildly Edited for Clarity (just for you Hibiki)]
I originally wrote this at school so I typed fast (and therefore, didn't think as I typed)

Gzim, I'm still trying to figure out what you just said...

Edit:
Thanks for the clearup Gzim, while those are valid points when judging an individual, it is not valid for the government of the Dutch people. The government is supposed to look out for the people to the utmost of it's ability, not cater to a perverted minority.

So I'll say it for you: OMGWTFBBQ!

If you take the average lifespan of everyone who lived past 5 in the 19th century (and before), the average lifespan shoots way up, and is closer to 60 than to 40. Infant mortality and young childhood diseases skew the numbers drastically.
