| Is it just me, or did Saturday morning come too quickly? ![]() Ah well....Welcome back to another edition of the Saturday Guest Writer series! Please help me welcome today's Guest Writer...Reza!! One thing I love about these Guest Wrtier Articles is that every article showcases the amount of diversity we have here in our community...and Reza's submission is no different! So here we go ![]() Does Climate change Exist? Ok so when IronSerif PM’d and asked me to write the guest Daily Disturbance I wasn’t sure that I’d be able to write an article that would be both acceptable and interesting. However I think that this is a subject that affects everyone on our little planet and I’m hoping it will get a decent healthy debate going. So anyway, a little about me and my interest in this subject, you all know me as Reza but my real name is Dave and I’m an Environmental Science student at the University of Leeds. I’m only in my first year but have been taking the similar courses for the last for years at school. So moving onto the real topic of discussion here, “Is climate change happening?†It’s a widely debated subject that involves everyone whether you like it or not, people who choose to ignore the subject all together will suffer the effects just as much as everyone else if it happens to be true. So, I feel that it’s best to be informed about the possible effects just in case the worst does happen. I personally think that climate change is happening and that it is caused by anthropogenic (human) releases of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere (gasses such as C02, Methane, and NOx etc.) But that is not the whole story. The climate of the globe is forever changing. In the last 2000 years we have had both hot and warm periods. The centuries of 1200 to 1400 hundred are well known in history for being particularly warm and the 1700 – 1850’s were known as the mini ice age. I mention this because there are always two sides to every argument and nothing I write is not necessarily the gospel truth, everyone should make up there own minds by doing further research into the subject. At the moment I can not see why the leaders of the greatest and most powerful countries on Earth are failing to prevent what I can only describe as the greatest threat in all of Earths history that is worse than the cold war. All around us we can see the effects of climate change, the ice caps are melting at an ever increasing rate, the sea levels are rising and counties all over the world are experiencing some of the most extreme weather events ever seen in modern history. Examples of this are the drought in Kenya, the Boscastle flooding a year ago in Britain and the Hurricane that devastated New Orleans in 2005. If extreme weather events aren’t enough to convince our leaders that this change is happening then maybe they should look at the hard evidence which shows that the planet has risen by 1.5 degrees in the last hundred years. Climate models have been made that show the temperature of the earth for the last X thousand years, these have been put together through evidence such as tree rings and gasses trapped in ice cores. The results have been correlated with natural phenomenon such as solar output and volcanic eruptions to show a direct correlation between temperature and natural factors. Up until the 1860’s that is; when the industrial revolution began to kick off, the temperature has been recorded directly by thermometers and has shown a massive spike upwards previously un-measured and natural factors do not keep pace with the increase. The curve can however be matched if you put man made factors such as greenhouse gasses into the equation. The effects that global warming and climate change will have on the Earth and on our societies are unimaginable, many of the worlds most populated cities are on or under sea level and just happen to be near the coast, 85% of the world population lives within 100 miles of the sea and unfortunately the sea levels will rise if the ice caps continue to melt. This is an issue that will not go away unless positive action is taken to reduce our input of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. This means using more renewable sources of energy and greener fuels. Furthermore…. surely wanting to live in a healthier society where we can all breathe clean air is enough reason to want to change the way things are? And also if climate change does happen, I for one want to know what the effects will be so I can make the most of my life and live with it as best I can. I would like to here other people’s opinions on this matter as it is one I feel very strongly on. Happy debating pimps and pimpettes. Reza ------- Awesome article man! Thanks for the submission and good luck with your education ![]() | ||
