| Well gang... Linux has become my newest plaything... I'm currently using Red Hat 9.0, so if my tips don't match up with your version, that's why.... MORE DESKTOP STUFF: PANELS: To get another toolbar put into place (I have the bottom one as the main, and then the "GNOME" stuff on the top. Right click on the main toolbar... select "New Panel", then "Edge Panel"... it'll put it right on top. MOVING THE UNMOVABLE! Okay... the main menu bar is COMPLETELY controlable. Most things you click, hold and move... but it seems things like the desktop switcher and some of the other "Placed" things don't wanna move... Just right click and select move... sucker slides all over the place! WORKSPACE SWITCHER... PUT IT ON A DIET! Okay, it's kind of a thick icon to start out with, but it's easily "Slimmed"... right click, go to properties, and select "4 rows" instead of two... it slims it down to a single line with all four screens PLAYING WITH YOUR COLORS: The bottom toolbar is a boring gray... but you have two options here... LINUX THEMES: Go to "preferences", "Themes" ... select a new theme for Linux... OR: Right click on the panel, select properties, the "Background" tab, and select "Color"... or if you like the "Floating in space" look.... select "Translucent"... Or use a picture... it's all good. The more advanced method is a little trickier... I spent some time pounding through Red Hat's knowledge base and found some pretty cool ways to mod your desktop... I'm still playing with these (I don't wanna blow up your rig... so I'm playing with these things on mine). Go to Red Hat, "System Tools", "More System Tools", "Configuration Editor"... you have almost a "Regedit" view of your desktop. Cool stuff... I'll post more on how to use it here soon! PROGRAMS FOR LINUX: Basically... your O/S seems to run everything... programs sit in the background until you hit somethin' you actually need 'em for. FLASH: It's just not the internet without Flash.. although now that all the internet advertisements work... that may or may not be a bad thing.... regardless... hit "Macromedia.com" and check out Flash for Linux! You won't be able to play your saved flash animations without playing around with WINE (I'll get back to you on that 'un)... but it WILL run the flash animations off web-sites. I'm still playing around with a lot of this stuff, so I'll post more programs as I find they work... I've downloaded "RealPlayer", but they go back so far in Linux history it's not funny. COOL STUFF: If you're running RH 9.0... you downloaded 3 discs worth of packages... Oddly, it only seems to install the tip of the iceberd... Click the Red Hat "Start" button, go to "System Settings" and select "Add/Remove Applications"... there is a TON of stuff to load up... Windows compatibility stufff, networking tools, server tools, and a ton of other stuff that can make your Linux experience go a helluva lot better! NOTE: You WILL need the discs to load the packages... so have 'em ready! I will present more as I learn more... but all in all, The Linux Experience has been a good one... Peace out! | ||
