| Warning: Today's DD post my ruffle some tail feathers. Proceed with caution. In case you don't know the definition for politically correct I checked with Wikipedia: Political correctness is a term used to criticize what is seen as misguided attempts to impose limits on language and the range of acceptable public debate. While it frequently refers to a linguistic phenomenon, it is sometimes extended to cover political ideology and behavior. The terms "politically correct" or "P.C." are also used. In today's world of trying to stay politically correct lest we offend someone, have we gone too far? Have we made our world so vanilla and plain that no one is supposed to be noticed for the very things that make us human to begin with? In our efforts to supposedly improve our world, have we in fact done the opposite? I mean come on did we really need to make it so hard to describe something that used to take one word now requires two or even more? Let's take a look at some examples: PC Term - Pre-PC Term
In a time when people are saying, "Let's keep it real", that seems to be the last thing we are doing. Thank you for reading ![]() In upcoming Daily Disturbance posts from me: * 96 Years * Freedom * Ahhh, College

| I use "Vertically Challenged" or "Gravitationally Suppressed" just about every day... We have platforms inside the firing positions on my range, so that the shorter firers (some were on tip-toes when they got to the "You must be THIS tall to join the Army" sign...) can actually see over the walls to be able to shoot and hit the targets... ![]() | ||

| Touchy subject, almost to the point of not being PC. Kinda of ironic that talking about Political Correctness isn’t politically correct. (Did I use ironic correctly?) Like many things in America (and the rest of the world), Political Correctness has been abused and and turned ugly. For example; back in the late 70s, early 80s, the term Chairman was replaced with Chairperson. This was done to remove the sexism of the original word. On applications, the word for sex has been replaced by gender (too many people kept answering ‘yes’ to the question). Now days, people tell you to use political correctness to keep from hurting someone’s feelings. For example, instead of saying your kid is dumb, we say they’re slow. In some cases, this may be true. In some cases, the kid is just dumb. Like in Bill Cosby’s routine where his son gets a reverse mohawk, that was dumb. Taking this a step further, which has been mentioned in other threads to a degree, is the lack of people’s vocabulary. This can cause people to look like they are not politically correct. Example is when you see a person with Down Syndrome and someone calls them dumb, stupid, or retarded. Retarded could be acceptable since a person with Down Syndrome has a limited mental capacity. However, the words dumb and stupid should not apply. Donald Trump has an average intelligence however he is dumb. He supposedly has money, but he’s still dumb (based on his former investments in junk bonds and lawsuit concerning casinos on Indian reservations a couple of years back). A hyperactive/hypertension child who does poorly in school is not retarded. This is a learning disability from an outside source and once the outside stimulus becomes controlled, the kid will start performing better in school. To an uneducated person, both kids are dumb….which is wrong. To a ‘PC’ person, both kids have a learning disability (slow)….which is wrong. To some of us, the kid with Down Syndrome is slow (because the term retarded has taken on a negative definition and not fit for someone with Down Syndrome) and the kid that has Hyperactivtity/Hypertension has HDHT. That’s my 2¢.
That would be Mimi from the Drew Carey show. Last edited by TimberWolf; 23-August-05 at 09:50 AM..

| on all those examples you sited I would use the non "pc" versions... whats the point of using the other ones it makes you look like an Idiot for not been able to confront the truth. It's simple politness not to say somone Is fat to their face unless they ask you if there fat wherupon the best answer is a crushing yes. | ||

| Apex Master Tech Apprentice | I hate to warp an old movie, but... "PC? I ain't got no PC. I don't need no PC. I don't have to show you any stinking PC!" That's my thought of the subject. We may live in more gentle times, but there is no reason (or even an excuse) to become blubbering pussies. There is a massive difference between being polite, and dancing around the elephant in the corner (PC). | |

You know seeing that word in your post reminded me of my pet peeve....I hate it when we are prompted to talk of people as "Native Americans" , "African Americans" etc..... the key word there is Americans.... If you were born in this country.....Your nothing but "AMERICAN".... Thats really how it should be.... we don't have a 'Native American Army" or an "African American Airforce" It's the "American Army" and the "American Airforce" What's next....the "Jewish American Marine Corps"? or the "Asian American Navy"? geeesh see how silly ti sounds..... AMERICAN......nuff said... Digi

I agree with you 99.9%, but for clarity, I used the descriptive term. The .1% disagreement is with:
I am an Italian/American, not an Italian-American. I was born here, but since my father immigrated from Italy and registered with the Italian consolate, he was allowed to maintain dual citizenship. And as his offspring, I am a dual citizen as well. Lucky for me they waived the mandatory tour of duty in the Italian Armed Forces. I can't imagine the number of push-ups I would have had to do because I didn't understand the sarge. Native peoples are in pretty much the same position, as their nations are soverign. Thankfully, otherwise there would be fewer casinos.

| My wife won't answer the 'voluntary' ethnic question on most forms, or if she does, she puts "other". Her motto: "I haven't been to Africa, don't want to go to Africa, my people for the last four or five generations have been over here, and since my grandma was full blood Cherokee, I guess I'm more Native American than African American. Therefore, since that isn't listed - I choose 'Other' cause there isn't a check box for Black, Ebony, or Coffee flavored." I went to college with a guy from upper Virginia who was blind since birth, and his opinion was: "I'm not optically challenged, I'm F***ing blind. Difference being that its not a challenge, its a way of life." We would cruise around the college in my car sometimes, him driving. Talk about some people doing double/triple/quad takes. So, coming from a follically-challenged, vision-enhanced, melanin-rationed, person of male gender (balding white boy w/glasses): you want sugarcoating, buy kid's breakfast cereal. But don't listen to me, because my normal speech causes those who live by political correctness to develop action plans and interventions, lest one of their sensativities be bruised. Skrew 'em. | ||
