| Since Rob has a busy life lately, and needed some fill-ins for his DD day, I have done the first PR movie review. So check it out and let us know how you like the idea, and if you would like to submit one yourself:Check Here ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Movie Review: Hustle & Flow Everybody gotta have a dream.... Intro Directed by: Craig Brewer Written by: Craig Brewer Executive Producer : Dwight Williams Producers : John Singleton, Stephanie Allain Genre: Drama / Music Wide Release: August 5, 2005 Rating: R Key Playas: Terrence Dashon Howard .... DJay Anthony Anderson .... Key Taryn Manning .... Nola Taraji P. Henson .... Shug Paula Jai Parker .... Lexus Elise Neal .... Yevette DJ Qualls .... Shelby Ludacris .... Skinny Black Isaac Hayes ....Arnel Official movie website offers soundtrack snippets, downloads and more. http://www.hustleandflow.com/ After having seen the commercial for this movie on TV I decided it was one that needed to be seen. Not only for the good story, but also because it had recieved awards and critical acclaim from both the Los Angeles, and Sundance Film Festivals. Ending up with 2 wins & 1 nomination in awards. Needless to say my expectations were high. Background Hustle & Flow is the brain child of Craig Brewer. It is written and directed by him, and released by Paramount Classics. The film itself is dedicated to Sam Phillips, the man who discovered Elvis Presley and founded Sun Records. Phillips' do-it-yourself attitude inspired Craig Brewer to write the film. Acting/Actors Some of the faces in this movie have been seen, but after their performances here we will be seeing more of them. In particular the lead actor of the story, Terrence Dashon Howard who plays DJay. In his role as a Memphis pimp trying to make it in life he is inspired by by a brief series of happenings to make his dream come true. During his journey we see many sides of him, and find out what a caring man he really can be. Even though the plot is sometimes predicatable it is completely okay. The actors make you not care about that aspect, but to be happy to sit back and watch the movie. Howard has done about 40 films for the big screen, and the little one. Most recently and of note among them Ray, and Crash. Along with another cast member of Hustle & Flow he is now set to play in the upcoming release of Four Brothers. Although not the lead role it should give him another chance to show his acting depth since in that he plays a cop. The other member of the Hustle & Flow cast that will also have a role in Four Brothers, Taraji P. Henson. In H ustle & Flow she plays Shug, a pregnant prostitute who is one of three women who work, and live with DJay. Shug she and DJay have a long history that they share. They seem to be able to speak candidly with each other without any front, and see beyond what the world sees in each other The next character worthy of a mention all her own is that of another of DJay's women, Nola. Played by Taryn Manning, this girl makes the film come to life. She is this unexpected spunky white girl who stands out in a world for who she is, not the colors of her skin. At times she appears to be a simple country girl, but proves to be a strong and smart woman. The rest of the cast adds their own special touches, but these are the main roles that shape, and make the film. Cinematography/Special Effects The film has no special effects per say, but none were needed since it is the acting that brings the film to life. Feeling not only the emotions of the people , but also the heat of being right in Memphis with them in the middle of summer. Summary This is a film I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a straight forward story with good acting, a respectable smattering of humor, and uncomplicated storyline. While the music may not be for everyone it is very catching, and you will be moving to the beat beore the film ends. The R rating on the film is primarily due to language, and of course some of the subject matter. Even though it deals with pimps and prostitutes the movie is not about sex, and does not use as a hook to lure in more ticket buyers. This film most likely will not receive and Oscar nomination it will be one that when released on DVD I will be buying it. On the Foe Scale of Movie Popcorn I give it 8 out of 10, with butter! PS - Saw Four Brothers and will do a review on that soon! Last edited by Foe; 17-August-05 at 07:08 PM.. Reason: title change | ||
