| No... that's not the real deal... but that's pretty much what it's gonna look like though Okay... so if you've hit the "Longhorn" thread in the forums... ya know I'm trying to hunt down a copy of Longhorn to beta-test and review... still, as I'm kind of obsessed with learnin' all about Longhorn, I figure I'll pass along what I DO know. After doing a ton of research on Microsoft's leaked Beta AND alpha (and we wonder why our software has so many security patches?), I've compiled some basic info on Windows Longhorn I figured I'd pass along! LONGHORN'S NEW FILING SYSTEM: WinFS (Windows Future Storage) is supposed to be the latest deal on Longhorn. The new filing system is supposed to allow for super-searching for multiple file types accessed within certain perimeters. All in all, it sounds like a lot of hype for somethin' I'm gonna use maybe once in a week... maybe once a month. I'm still digging for more info on whether or not it actually is in any way better than NTFS... I'll post as I learn more... NEW FEATURES: The hype includes DVD burning capabilities, new start menu and taskbar features, and a new security system (see below) called "Palladium". Also, the new icons are kind of neat. Longhorn "Plex" desktop is supposed to be the latest deal as well... betazoids have basically said this is going to be as popular as a guy with gas in a crowded elevator. I guess I wouldn't hold high hopes for it kicking Mac O/S 10 in the ass for style... or even ye olde' Win XP for that matter (I still prefer StyleXP to the Longhorn default). SECURITY: Windows Longhorn is supposed to take security to the next level with actual HARDWARE-based security. It's claiming to help against Hackers, I'm wonderin' just how effective that chip is going to be... especially for making sure your Windows Longhorn version is registered... this chip will identify you AND your computer... I wrote a sci-fi novel awhile back (I really should try again to get that puppy published) about chips built into your computer... trackin' where you go, what you're doing and who you're talking to... all in the name of "Security"... truth is either stranger than fiction... or it catches up, it seems. RELEASE DATE: I've been hearing late 2004, or sometime 2005... I'm sure time will improve Longhorn (so far, it had better...) I'll post more as I find out more!!! | ||

| Anytime you want to leak me some icon images and a style xp capable theme I'd be more than happy DS.... I'd love to have everyone think I run longhorn. ![]() To me, longhorn sounds like an XP update with a rename of one thing, and added bull****. More fat to cut in the name of performance. ![]() | ||

| Good article on TCPA/Palladium http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/tcpa-faq.html Instead of playing with processors, disabling the Fritz chip may become the new rage. Then instead of cracks for software there will be a increase in patchs to bypass Fritz chip checks in software. Or instead of flashing the bios, it'll be flashing the Fritz. It seems like they're just giving software priates something new to play with, and if you look back, it's something that they enjoy doing and only makes it more popular. Microsoft, Intel, and companies that want to own it all are just making more people dislike them. Which is okay, Intel and MS haven't been interested in their consumers for a while it seems, and they deserve a serious backlash in my humble opinion. I respect Microsoft for their making home computing easy for the general public. Because for as much as some of us dig into them, we more often than not use their products because we are comfortable with them. But it doesn't mean I won't start cheering for the pirater if they go as far as this nightmare waiting to happen could go. Freedom and privacy shouldn't be part of the already over bloated price tag for a product. | ||

| I wish they would make Windows: Performance Eddition... none of the BS, made exclusively for power users and experienced users... but then, i suppose they do... they just call it linux .. but the point r4emain, instead of always trying to dummy down and automate EVERYTHING why do they never make anything for those that actually know waht they are doing.. hell, i jump to DOS (yes, real DOS, i still run win98) when i want to do most system ops anyway... (and you STILL can't do things like "ren *.html *.htm" in 'dows)... oh well.. complaining to MS is like looking for chastity at a hooker's convention.... | ||
