Post Bookmarks: What's in your browser?

In going through my bookmarks recently I found myself wondering what made me keep certain pages, and turn them into bookmarks. I mean out of the billions and billions of sites, pages and infomration on the web it is like finding a needle in a haystack. My theory is if you do a comparison of browsers a lot of the same bookmarks are held by people who travel the sme types of sites. Even in the vast net seems the best information always rises to the top. A prime example is we all found PR.

There were some bookmarks that left me without a clue why or for what purpose they ended up being kept. That is when it was decided that it was time to get them cleaned up, and better organized. Do a little spring cleaning on my bookmarks...okay summer cleaning.

First off I looked at the folders to make sure that they still were applicable to my needs, and clearly defined as to what went where. In my main browser, Firefox, I have 4 primary folders, and 10 secondary. They all were suitably named, so next was to check out the bookmarks themselves. In total for all folders there are 283 bookmarks. That seems like a lot more than it is when I counted them up...yes, I really counted them. I'm anal about somethings...okay most things.

The bookmarks that I know were fine I left alone, but then I found a cool tool to help with the others. There is a neat little application that will go through your links to make sure there are no deadlinks. This app is cleaverly called AM-Deadlink, and I have the homepage here for anyone else who wants to check it out.

AM-DeadLink

So I gave that a run, and it really did work pretty well for me, and only took a few minutes. Next was to go through the remaining markers and see what was the root of their being. Surprisingly I found very few that were of no use anymore. There were maybe 10 that got removed. Considering most have been on this PC since a reformat 10 months ago. Guess that shows when I make a commitment I have a hard time letting go...did I mention I am a stalker? But I digress.

For me my bookmarks really breakdown into categories when I stopped and looked. See if these categories apply to you:

Daily Use: These are bookmarks I could not do without, kind of like coffee to some people. Typically these will be used more than once per day. They are ones such as Dictionary.com, FoxNews.com and a few others.

Time Killers/Wasters: This one is pretty self explanatory. When I have some free time to geek, I may go check them out. Mostly these are the art sites. Either in the galleries or in the tutorials and forums.

News: These are the ones I check to catch up on the latest in gaming, and PC related news.

Regular Visits: Not to be confused with conjugal visits. These would be the sites I am either staff, or admin. Checking in periodically is something I try to make time in my day for, and somedays there is more time than others.

So what is it that makes a page or site worth turning into a bookmark in your browser? Or even more important, dare I say it...a TAB! Now that would be some serious commitment! Speaking of which, I only have a mere 6 tabs in Firefox. Those really are the ones that fall into Quick Access or Do it NOW! These are ones that I do not even want to fudge with the menu to get to them. One click is all the time you want to spend before getting that instant gratification.

Now there are even sites that will store your bookmarks online. One reason for this would be for those who travel, but do not have a laptop. They use internet cafes or someone elses PC, but need to access their own bookmarks. So there is even a bookmark for your bookmarks. Check it out for yourself here:

Bookmark Keeper

In closing thought I would share a couple of random links.
Just for fun:
EarthView
Never know when you can use this:
Unit Converter
Cool stuff:
Yugo Pop

What's in your browser? Got some links you want to share?

Thanks for reading!

Did I hear "Coffe"?

Let's see................I have a couple of sites I am staff/admin at, then a bunch of Bryce and art sites, some tech sites for finding news, New York Times and a couple of other online papers, couple of direct links to mailaccounts, and some sites for mapping communities. Around 70 all in all, if I counted right.
Ran the Deadlink-thingymybob, and it din't find anything dead in my computer

If we take into account that there are around 8 billion sites in total on the net, 70 bookmarks ain't that bad?

I have quite a few bookmarks.
I currently have 86 and that is after much pruning.
I even classify them into 3 sections.
Anime bookmarks
Game bookmarks
Misc bookmarks

Pimprig is NOT on my bookmarks.
Have no fear, it is my homepage

Errrr....is there a 12-step program for link junkies? I have this friend....

After a not-so-quick check (took about as long as a defrag) I had 2022 links. Deleted the dead ones and netted 1798. Granted, some of those are duplicated, but I'll leave those be as my organizational trees require that some links be grouped in more than one way.

Anyone that knows me in IM will tell you I'm a link junkie, but I'm fine with it. I do research for Dragonmodz products, my own projects, news, entertainment, my construction business, cars, banking, writing reference pages....the list goes on....on enough that just the first tree trunk has to be scrolled. I've gone into My Favorites (do this through Windows Explorer. Using "Organize Favorites" will take you forever) and created a lot of subfolders for the major categories. Many of them have subfolders....and some of them have sub-subfolders. It works well for me to save links as I'm doing a research session, as I can just drop them into the appropriate categories. Often I will rename folders with a "^" or an "*" to allow them to sit at the top of the tree to speed that process up and save a bit of scrolling. When I've exhausted the research on that subject, a quick rename drops it back down to the standard alphabetical index. As sick as that may seem to some of you, the entire list only takes up 324KB. I can't be without my links, and I often back them up and transfer them out to my shop computer, in case I need to reference something quickly (and save walking the 35' to the house).

Holy Bookmarks Wordbiker!!!!!!!!! Dang now I do not feel so bad about mine. You even have an organizational tree? Ouchie! Among all your other skills you could give a "Organize Your Bookmarks Lesson".

I have heard that people who cheat in games have problems performing sexually. Therefore they are trying to compensate for their short comings. Can you confirm that for us?
