Default Hey Whats This Lump?

Texture is not only what you can feel but in addition of what the eye can see. It can vary in many different ways and give an interest to the viewer or in a modders case (Get it caseÂ…sigh bad joke) texture can be shown off with light.

Most of us know about the texture paint from a few years ago and the texture paint factory cases have on them when we get them from the store. The first thing most people do is want to strip that stuff off and get a nice smooth paint job on that puppy. That’s all fine and good but try to look at what you can do with the contrast of a texture surface and say a polished out or chrome inside. Texture will suck a light source and give shadows and depth. Ultra smooth will reflect light and “mirror” the outside. There is nothing wrong with any of these paint jobs you decide to do but the point I am trying to make is mix it up some. The contrast will help show off one another and draw a dividing line to the area or gear you want to show off.

For example with a visual texture think of some of these cars that have a wooden dash. They are sanded smoothed, glossy and the have leather surrounding it. Both surfaces are smooth but reflect light in a different way. The eye can tell that there is a different texture happening and draws in the viewer. LetÂ’s not forget the gauges the chrome, glass and depth of a needle on the speedometer. Each and every element that is used will vary a little bit but have its own personality. Hard part is making is all work together. I was talking to a member the other day that wanted to put an aluminum face plate over his bezel. He wanted to polish out everything and squirt on gloss black. I suggested to him maybe polish out the inside, brush the faceplate, and go with the gloss black. The metal would be the highlight of what was going one.

It doesnÂ’t have to just be gear but paint also. Flat paint against a glossy gives an interesting texture. Just remember that flat or texture really does pull in a light source be careful on where or how you use it. It would not be good inside a case that you want to really shine. Go walk around it is the summer check out buildings, the interiors, car lots and look at the contrast between the interior and the exterior. See what you can implement from interior designers, landscapers, and sculptors.

Have a good week folks and congrats to all the new grads out there

Thanks!

If you look at the side of my case at an angle, it looks as if it were sprayed with a can...but if u look at it straight on..it looks flat and is semi reflective.

Nice one flounder. Since my next project will be me learning more about paint, and the paint process this is a good referance. Gives some good ideas for creative ways to enhance or even hide things.

Is that meant as a joke? Even if it was not, it is not even remotely funny.

Agreed. I'm notorious for using Hammered finish on my cases. It requires almost zero prep work, comes out shiny and smooth looking, but has a lot more reflective surface than a smooth gloss.
