Default Samurai Experiments: Volume 2!

Samurai Experiments: Week 2

Well gang, if you missed the first "Samurai Experiments"... I'm packing up my entire life except my computer.

Before we get started, I never mentioned the rig I'm using for Samurai Experiments... it was damn near bleeding edge when I bought it... but time has been cruel to me with the fact my proc is now exactly half as fast as the best on the market...

SYSTEM USED FOR SAMURAI EXPERIMENTS:

1.5 Ghz P4 (478)...
512 Megs DDR PC-2100 RAM
431 Watt Enermax PSU
x2 80 Gig Hard-Drives
24X Plextor CD-RW
16X Toshiba DVD-ROM
3.5
Antec 1030SX case
(plus a crapload of mods, but this is the core stuff...)

Last week I covered why books and the like won't be going anywhere...

What I've found out this week!

PEN AND PAPER:

I figured "Ahh, hell... what am I gonna need a pen for"... then I had to draw a diagram of an idea I had... I had to hunt down somethin' to write with... I like drawin' in "Paint", but let's face it... it's still quicker to scribble something down than it is to hit "Text", put in the little box, and hope it don't kill part of your drawing if the box expands...

FILE SHARING:

Napster is back up at only roughly 24 bucks for 2 years... it'd be kind of nice to get OUT of Kazaa's spotlight as that seems where the RIAA seems to have it's knickers in a twist... I'm thinkin' about it...

POWER:

Converting your entire life over to PC takes up some hard-drive space... I've recently moved both my 80 gig Barracuda's together for 160 gig of space... I still have to reorganize it, and cut it down for space... I also loaded my 24X Plextor back to my main rig 'cause I'm looking for new music for the car. Past that, hardware is good.

ENTERTAINMENT IN GENERAL:

I've had some fun this week reorganizing my systems. As a hardcore-hardware junkie, playing with these things and having a whole new realm of power to play with... just puts a smile on my lips and a song in my heart (usually by the crapload of MP3s blasting off my system...)

This week, I've decided to dedicate one rig to sole Linux operations so I can learn more about it, and still have some music until I get my soundcard issues solved (lousy Creative Labs... someone down there needs to get off their duff and do a friggin' Linux driver already!).

Unfortunately... my optical drive in that rig went to that big ejector tray in the sky. Linux refuses to load 'cause the drive keeps failing and locking up, so I gotta find a cheap-ass replacement for it. As I said in my last post... hardware failure concerns are high.

THINGS MY PC IS ALSO FILLING IN FOR:

As I live in a family of PC fanatics... and we're moving... all of our systems are in a single location to get the out of the way of daily packing.

This means the heater isn't on quite so much! PC makes this room nice and toasty after a second or third PC is flicked on!

LIGHT SOURCE:

Between my pimped-out rigs (lotsa LEDs) and my monitor... who the hell needs a night-light?!?

THINGS IT'S DONNED ON ME PC'S WON'T BE REPLACING ANYTIME SOON:

Clothes (although I did see a cool "Computer Suit" that was pretty friggin' sweet on the "Discovery Channel" a year or two ago).

Food: Despite the name... you can't live off of "Spam".

Water: Although... with processors heating up all the time, condensation might turn your PC into a regular downspout you could make hot tea off of!

WEEK 2: General Observations:

Week two is going well... I still miss some of my books, but GTA3 (which I've managed to beat 63 out of 72 missions and the game in general) is fillin' the gap for now.

Also, I'm kind of missing my old Nintendo system and Playstation (going through a Resident Evil Jones)... mostly 'cause an Emulator just doesn't provide the right feel (I may actually have to break down and buy a joystick one of these years).

In between, I'm missin' a couple of my VCR Tapes... but not badly... Computer is still keeping me entertained and stimulating my mind.

Stay tuned... I'll be filling in MORE uses I find for this thing in the next few weeks!

Aaaahhhhh.

Agreed. Gimmie a musty old hardback any day, one you gotta turn the pages with care in, cause of all the readings it's had already....

Good luck with the move DS, if you get to missing the 'puters too much, give me a call, and I can read off some Google pages for you
