| Okay, the advantages of mods include insane steps to drop temperatures and lookin’ really friggin’ sweet. The disadvantage is that if you’ve looked at Wal-Mart or an actual furniture store lately, the desks seem to hide your PC… like you should be ashamed of it. Hell, most won’t even fit a decent sized mid-tower. Thus I present five solutions for searchin’ for a decent desk to show off your mod! Most of the desks available, you have to unplug everything to even pull the computer out. The answer usually is to either set it on top of the desk (thus killing Keyboard/Monitor/Mouse space or set it beside the desk (thus inviting massive amounts of dust and hair from your floor). There are better ways though! One: Mod your desk! This project requires a little skill. Add a window kit to your desk! Don’t cut so much wood out that you weaken the frame, but if you have a bad-ass mod, you want to see it, right? Do fitted Plexiglas into both sides of the hole, and glue them into place. Try to frame the job so it doesn’t look too ghetto. Two: Find an open desk! There are metal frame desks that allow easy access to your PC, show it off and are pretty sweet. These tend to be a little on the small side for the ones I’ve seen so far. Three: Spendy Desk These are desks designed for professional/business PC users (they always get the best toys). These usually can support more than one PC (w/ monitor) and are pretty open and available. The only drawback is a hefty price-tag. I used to have one when I was a network admin... you want lotsa power in one spot, these desks make life sweet! Four: Rack it! Mostly used for servers, a wire rack will show off your PC with an industrial look! Some of these babies run over $1,000.00 (USD) though! Nobody said bein’ a computer super-stud was cheap. Five: Cheap fix I’m guilty of this one… my PC used to be on top of my filing cabinet… which keeps my desk free. Still, if you have a big desk, this may be unattractive for the “lean wayyyyyyyyyyy over to do anything†factor. Desks usually don’t get that much attention in the mod world, but if you show yours up in an interesting way, it’ll be just as memorable as your mod! Besides, yer gonna be the one lookin’ at it everyday! | ||

| as far as desks go. i can't think of a single desk i have ever owned that i really liked. either they are too small or they are too big and closed in to the point that it is a chore to organize and have access to the cpu its self. i have looked at the anthro carts, but they are way over priced for what you get. if i was going to spend what anthro cart wants for a desk, i would just as well build my own desk. i have been thinking of a desk design now for quite some time. a desk to suit my needs right now and in the future. a modders desk that will compliment any box i may build with all the featuers i could need. only time will tell if i will ever get to it. | ||

| Etiquette & English Gentleman | I got fed up with so called "computer desks", so about 9 months ago I made up my own. Basically its a pair of chrome/wire rack wardrobes (these have already gone out of fashion, so I can't give you any links )I removed the hanging rails, repositioned the shelves, cut up two 8'x4' 9mm ply boards & covered them in blue leatherette, screwed them on, and bob's yer uncle: Before any complains about all the junk, I_did_ tidy it before I took the photo, you should've seen it before! Note the leather chair "ah lahks to surf nekkid" (j/k) ![]() | |

| Jon_the_Prong, Those look almost just like the wire workstations you can buy at dartek.com lol only diff is they are taller and have the pull out kb mouse shelf (Linkie http://www.dartek.com/browse/Configu...ving/index.cfm ) Nice job... And your desk is mush more organized than my $120 WalMart behemoth... Its freaking huge but poorly designed (noticed after I got more monitors and argh ) but its deep enough to keep my 19" monitor back away from the front enought to say... put another KB in front of it (although I dont) ... Its nice but plain.. | ||

| Etiquette & English Gentleman | Good find Twiz' - I don't think it's identical, but it's very close. Not a bad price either - I got the wardrobes discounted & had the leatherette lying around, but my "desk" wasn't that much cheaper. If anyone is going to do something similar at home, I'd say that boarding up the shelves you use most is essential - the bare wire stuff is a pig to move stuff about on, + you're always dropping pens & stuff through it ... nowhere flat enough to put your coffee either. | |

| Sooooo Jon, do I spy a couple bike helmets on the top shelf then? Are you another temp'rary human on weekends? I ride too btw... Sorry 'bout the off-topic Just to make up for it, the desk I have could be used to great effect, it has a little shelf off to the left where a printer or scanner is 'sposed to sit, it's about 6 inches below the surface of the desk, and full depth. High and proud! It's just a cheapo from bestbuy, but quite effective... | ||

You spy correctly 'billy. Unfortunately, fondling my helmet is about as close as I've got to riding in a long time, I've not worked in months & I can't afford the insurance ![]() | ||||||||||||||||||||

| You know.. DS.. this has inspired me.. I am now going to mod my desk to fit an extra Montior on it, so I can have my linux box on my desk.. Thank you for the inspriation lol I resorted to putting my PC on the floor and man.. it gets dusty in there so I've come to clean it out regularly.. which is annoying.. perhaps I should mod my desk..lol | ||

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Fiberglass is the ultimate materiel for a custom desk. You can custom shape it by using urethane foam, and then you top it off with body filler and prime/paint/clearcoat it with auto paint. It will look like the dashes of those import tuner cars. | |
