| Now then, if your first question was "What in the hell is Biometrics?", let's go ahead and dive right in! Okay, so most of us will probably never need this much security to protect our computers (unless the RIAA decides to do randomn searches)... however, it is still very likely within our lifetimes that biometrics could become a mainstream security system. Biometrics is basically using the your body as your key. Such things as fingerprints, retinal scans, voice patterns, blood tests, facial matching, heat patterns, hand geometry and pressure sensative signatures. Multi-biometrics are when you combine multiple biometrics to form a more perfect security. Fingerprints Fingerprints everyone is rather familiar with. The police have been collecting fingerprints since before they even knew what to do with them. In this technology, the defining characteristics of your prints would be used, if it didn't match the digital signature of your exact print, you wouldn't be allowed access. There are some that even require a pulse to further security measures. Retinal Scans Most of us have seen these in the movies. Basically, the computer matches the pattern of your eyeball to the computers. There are a lot of veins in the eyes, so it's unique to each person, also if you study deeper into Iradology, the very shape of the cornea, iris, and the coloring is unique. Voice Patterns Voice Patterns are also widely publized. Basically, you speak a pass-phrase, and the frequency and patterns of your voice open the door. Blood Tests Basically, you'd recieve a small prick to a finger or thumb and your genetics would open the lock. Still, if anyone has given blood... it's not the big ol' honkin' needle they stuff in your arm that itches and burns later.. it's the little prick they give your fingie to check your iron levels. Facial Scanning Facial Scanning is when the very shape of your face is your key. Heat Signatures Everyone has a unique heat pattern. A scan can tell you apart from a billion other people. Hand Geometry This is where the shape of your hand is scanned... Usually done with more advanced fingerprinting techniques (although spending time "alone" could change things, I'd imagine). Some argue that Biometrics is a violation of privacy, as all of your body characteristics are on file, while others are tired of having to remember a lifetime full of passwords and codes. Other security measures include installing a chip just under your skin... it would contain all of your information, and would be like a bar-code. You just put your hand under a scanner to identify yourself. There is also something called a "proximity chip" in keycards that will open doors from a few feet away. The future of security is a sci-fi movie... should be interesting to see what those paranoid (with good reason) folks develop in the future! | ||
