Well we all had fun, thought about why we do what we do. So I figured it's only fair for me to state what I think it's all about.
Modding: The act of manipulating objects from standard form for better function or asthetics.
Modder: One that does what others say cannot be done, or a person who wishes to make a object an extension of their creativity.
We here are
PR almost exclusively associate "modding" in relation to the computer case. Sometimes even it's hardware and the operating system. To be this close minded is to restrict our creativity, we have no sole claim to this word. You can mod a car, a toaster, or in the case of Peter's Princess' son a sisters hair. Modding isn't something all do though, even with it's wide range of targets. It's a different breed for sure, and most no one stands under only one flag.
To modify anything, a person either most possess confidence in their own skills (correctly place or not), or enough money to burn in the attempt. But, most importantly they have to know they can take limits and move or destroy them. Most start small, building their skills and tool collection as they go. Some start off big and bite off more they can chew. The one thing that is always constant is a desire for "better". A Modder will never, even if they could, try to live a life of blissful ignorance. We have faith in (our bias opinions aside) the manufactures, but we also have the knowledge in the back of our head there is always more to be obtained.
Few of us in reference to computers, or our lives, stick to one target. We as Modders are obviously cronic tinkerers, prideful in our ability to claim to be Jacks of All Trades. Computers, automotive, audio... anything under the sun with parts (called servicable or not) is fair game. Overclock it til it catches fire, rev it til the engine screams, and blast the radio til your "seat cover" begs no more. We live in search of a glimpse of fame, or we'll go down in flames.
HOORAH PimpRig. Hoorah. Long live the dremel crazy, cuttin' and welding Tinkerer within. Our skills vary, our goals different... but no one here will ever settle for less than their best. A Modder's best is NEVER less than the processed, assembled, castrated and bland most settle for. Modders, regardless of site affiliation, gender, age, race, nationality, choice of boxers or briefs: never become lackadaisical.
Iateronmly - servicing non-servicable parts, and voiding warranties for cheap thrills.
