| Etiquette & English Gentleman | … or is it a virtue? You’d think the latter by the way some people are so proud of telling you just how early they get up. I think in that case it’s a vice – to paraphrase Lazurus Long, the old saw about the early bird catching the worm just goes to show that the worm should have stayed in bed. The reason I was thinking about this was because my day has radically shifted around with my recent change of job. Up until a couple of weeks ago, I got up at around 10am, bummed around until going to work at 4pm, and ended up going to bed around 2am. To me, it made sense – I’d merely adjusted my waking hours to suit my job, and as I was getting 8 hours or so sleep, I didn’t think I was being lazy… but to those that think that getting up at 4am is a sacrament, I was. I have to admit though, that pattern was turning me into a zombie – I had the energy to do what I needed to, but there was very little extra energy left over for anything else. The stuff I did for fun, like gardening, cooking, even modding pretty much went out the window. Now, my lighbox (0-10,000 lux in about 3 seconds ) comes on at 4.15am so I turn over to snooze & face that for an hour or so, so when the alarm goes off at 5.20am, I manage to get up not long after, and head off for work just before 7am. Bedtime varies according to how tired I feel, but just after 10pm is average.I don’t want to harp on about it, but this is really working out a lot better for me – I’ve got a whole load more energy. For example, on Saturday I had a lie in – till 6am – then got up & finished my Christmas shopping, & did a bit of fiddling about on my car, & did a bit more planning/purchasing for my new project rig. Ordinarily, I’d have got up after 10am, and pretty much done nothing & still been in my pyjamas when it came round to thinking about getting some lunch … at around 2pm. After doing a completely sedentary job for so long, I do feel pretty tired in the evenings, but I’m sure I’ll get fitter & be more inclined to do things after work too … I’m thinking of rejoining my local horticultural society, and possibly starting a class to learn another language (Japanese or Spanish, I haven’t really made my mind up yet). Maybe early rising is a virtue after all. | |

| I'm not one of those folks who can jump out of bed and go to work. Well, I can, but I don't enjoy it. I get up around 0430, grab my cup of coffee, and sit in front of the computer for about an hour catching up on the site and the news. Then I grab a 20 minute shower to shake the cobwebs out and by 0630 I'm ready to head out the door. I enjoy that first hour, it's my quiet time where I can plan my day in peace. | ||

| well...they say that getting up early is good. because it gets your body ready for the day like if have gotten up sometimes and find that the earier i get up the more i get done, whether that be making morning calls or getting up and checking whats going on in the world (TV) sometimes its nice to get up and wake up to a nice quiet household, no noise no sounds of kids running around or big trucks smashing and crashing on the roads as the drive. trying to get up early is hard, i'll give it that, but its worth it in the long run! | ||

Flowers...your not serious are you? Im sorry I just find it incredibly funny, no offence but I didnt see a man like you getting into that sorta thing, but none the less if it pleases the mind, go for it. Im sure ee'll be seeing the first Amiga - implanted cactus in a matter of months. Sleep wise im a bit kinda everywhere. 18 years old is when hibernation for the later years happens. My college days arent great. Up at 6am (which for any teenager take up about 18 Gigawatts of mind power), and at the but stop at 7:30 for College at 9:00. I get home about 6pm -ish (bus takes hour and a half to get to and from College), and then type merrily away on the internet and games, have dinner, and in the summer sometimes go stuff outside or ride my bike. Bed is about 12 usually unless theres an Assignment due in which case its 3am. As for the early bird thing...uh uh no way. If im not at college, im in bed till gone 12pm. I love my sleep, so dont even think of getting me up on free days without asking for a lot of bad attitude coming form me. ![]() | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Heh, daywalkers. I get up about 1pm during the week(later now that HL2 is out), but I start work at 4pm and go til 1230am. I usually make it to bed around 430-5am. I've been up until at least 8am the past week playing NFSU:2 and HL2. I do seem to lag a bit more than my daywalking pals, especially in the winter, but I like being awake late at night for the same reasons some get up early. Peace and quiet. I spent a week on vacation this past summer camping in the Black Hills in South Dakota and I was rising anywhere from 5-7am and hitting the sack around 10pm. I did seem to have more pep, but I think that was because I was doing what I wanted to do, not what I had to do(work sucks). | ||

| I get up around eight or nine, have my morning usual of a few shots then a pot of coffee, by ten I'm actually awake, and open the shop at eleven, because prime buisness traffic starts right before noon. (I seldom have had customers before then, when I opened early.) Work until six or seven, close the shop, fufill the orders of the day if we can, and head home. I can usually fit PR into my whole day silmutaneously too, so this works out well. Plus, living in florida, every day can be a vacation if you want it to, thus I'm having second thoughts about moving elsewhere. I'm sipping goldshlager and smoking a hand rolled honey cigarette now, after a good buisness day. ![]() | ||
