| Etiquette & English Gentleman | Someone (I think it was Mist') suggested a reinstatement of weekly quizzes in the Daily Disturbance section. It's not going to appear weekly, or possibly even ever again, but here are thirty questions to test you on a wide range of topics. The uncharitable might say it was the first 30 questions that came into my mind ... and they'd be right ![]() Some of the questions have more that one correct answer, some of them are highly subjective and have no correct answer, but what the heck ![]() I'll post my answers later & you can mark yourselves. Quiz over - "Correct" answers posted below 1: What does the acronym "DOS" stand for in PC terms? 2: And what does it stand for if you're talking about AmigaDOS? 3: What feature did Atari ST owners claim made their machine superior to the Amiga? 4: And what features did the Amiga have that kicked the ST?s arse for 99.9% of owners? 5: And how much would it have cost the other 0.1% to buy an upgrade? 6: Just what would Meat Loaf _not_ do for love? 7: Imagine you want to fit a 120mm blowhole on your case - what tool(s) would you use, and why? 8: Musically, what's the difference between Northern Soul and Motown? 9: Post links to the websites of three members of PR staff (mine not included), - OR - post a link to the PR page showing how to start folding@home. 10: How old is BigAkita? 11: Who's been here the longest - me, BigAkita, or Duckwarrior? 12: What username did I use before changing it to Jonny English? 13: And why? 14: You've got a 4.5v, 25mA LED you want to run off a 12v supply - what resistor do you need? 15: What's the cheapest way of reducing fan speed? Explain why this works using plumbing analogies. 16: Who burninates peasants & thatched roof cottages on a regular basis? 17: Post a link for a bonus point. 18: What's The_Lost_Monkey's occupation? 19: And what sort of motorcycle does he ride? 20: Someone suggested that the term "premod" should be abandoned in favour of an alternative. | I wrote down my real answers for the ones I knew without reminding myself or research but I thought I would just throw up my usual smart-arsed answers for some of these along with the ones I remember. 1. Disk Operating System 2. ummm, same as #1 with Amiga in front of it? 5. Your left testicle 6. That 7. CD (for template), holesaw for cutting, then either files (for obvious reasons) or C channel. 8. Don't know......don't care 9. http://team.pcapex.com/ 10. Old enough to know better, young enough not to care. 11. You 12. Jon the Prong 15. Unplugging it 16. Trogdor 17. http://www.homestarrunner.com/trogdor.html 18. Undertaker 23. AnotherN00bTalkinIgnorantMuck 24. A Rook doesn't get "tattooed" on your arm when you make E-4 25-27 Who comes up with these questions? ![]() 28. 43 29. Cannonball Run 30. Only 1, the rest were just rubbish....... ![]() | ||

| 1. Disk Operating System 2. DOS for Amiga 7. Template, hole saw, file, drill 9. Free pr0n! 18. Police officer 25. Depends on weight/hp ratio. 27. Wheel turning force for real pulling power Does this mean I'm stupid? | ||

| 1. Disk Operating System 2. DOS for Amiga 6. It's hard to love meat loaf 7. Dremel with 426 cut off discs and then some grinding bits to soften the burrs 9. http://team.pcapex.com 10. Old enough to change Methusela's diapers (that was the answer someone used at some point) 11. You 12. Jon The Prong 13. Some prick on another site was using that name and making a fool of it 14. A 330 Ohm'er (have to round up) 15. Using the 12V+ rail on the red fan wire and the 5V+ rail on the black wire. Basically, the water from the 12V is going faster and pushes back all 5V's from the other line. ---><- = --> (simplified diagram) 16. Trogdor! 17. http://www.homestarrunner.com/trogdor.html 18. Undertaker 19. A freaking cool one 24. A crow doesn't have a game named after it 27. Torque is really important and it's the power at the wheels that gets put out, or, something like that 28. 42 (I'm pretty sure it's 42, but I know the reference from Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe) 29. Those cool videos that mnpctech posted about the car chases in Sweden 30. A ton if you include all of the little specials (Star Wars Christmas Special, anyone?), but, 5 from the main series that are currently released. (and I like Godfoot's answer the best) | ||

| 1: What does the acronym "DOS" stand for in PC terms? Disk Operating System (or Denial Of Service) 2: And what does it stand for if you're talking about AmigaDOS? No clue 3: What feature did Atari ST owners claim made their machine superior to the Amiga? That spiffy little Atari logo? 4: And what features did the Amiga have that kicked the ST?s arse for 99.9% of owners? I wish I knew, but I was 10 at the time playing with the casette tape drive on my vic 20 that I had hooked up to the living room television. 5: And how much would it have cost the other 0.1% to buy an upgrade? Hopefully less than it cost to fill up my gas tank nowadays. 6: Just what would Meat Loaf _not_ do for love? He can do whatever he wants for love, just as long as it keeps him too busy to sing. 7: Imagine you want to fit a 120mm blowhole on your case - what tool(s) would you use, and why? A CD, A dremel w/ cut off wheels, rubber grommets, and c-strip rubber moulding. The CD for tracing a circle the size of the fan, the dremel to cut it, the c-strip to make it look clean, and the rubber grommets to keep it quiet. 8: Musically, what's the difference between Northern Soul and Motown? Motown is typically American? 9: Post links to the websites of three members of PR staff (mine not included), - OR - post a link to the PR page showing how to start folding@home. Uh. doh. 10: How old is BigAkita? By my best estimate, at least 36. 11: Who's been here the longest - me, BigAkita, or Duckwarrior? Duckwarrior? 12: What username did I use before changing it to Jonny English? Martha Stewart 13: And why? Because you're the only person I've read about using heat shrink on individual non-black wires when sleeving a psu just to give it that extra special Martha touch. 14: You've got a 4.5v, 25mA LED you want to run off a 12v supply - what resistor do you need? Uh, My dad would kick my ass. He's an electrician and I should know this, when I was young I had one of those little boards with the springs that you could connect with wires and make all kindsa stuff, back then I knew what all the stripes meant--liquor must have killed that part of my brain. (alternate answer: I don't know, but I bet google does.) 15: What's the cheapest way of reducing fan speed? Connecting the leads for the fan to the two outside leads of a 4 pin molex, I believe. Explain why this works using plumbing analogies. Well, uh... if you are sending 12 somethings of water through a loop, then uh, you want the pipes to connect to where 12 something of water comes out and then you want to drain it off to another pipe that has nothing comming through it. To make it where only 7 somethings of water move through the loop at once, you can hook the draining side up to a pipe that has 5 something of water comming out of it, this fights against the 12 somethings and you end up pushing the water though still, but at the slower rate of 7 somethings? err. 16: Who burninates peasants & thatched roof cottages on a regular basis? Strongbad? 17: Post a link for a bonus point. http://www.silentpcreview.com 18: What's The_Lost_Monkey's occupation? Not a navigator or a map maker I hope. 19: And what sort of motorcycle does he ride? Hopefully one with a GPS navigation system. 20: Someone suggested that the term "premod" should be abandoned in favour of an alternative. Who was it? Someone tired of getting flamed for their premodded case? 21: What was the suggested term? Now I'm curious . . . 22: What's the name of Glitterkill's cat? Spunkface 23: Post an amusing anagram of someone's PR username. Stereomod could be "more toes!" if I didn't have the extra "d" 24: What's the difference between a Crow and a Rook? A crow is a bitch to move around on a chessboard? 25: How many horsepower (BHP) do you need to do 150mph? uh. 26: How many BHP does the average horse develop? Depends on the horses diet. 27: Why is torque (lbs-ft) more important than BHP anyway? Because it allows you to accelerate faster under a heavier load? 28: What's the answer to life, the universe and everything? 2, seriously. 29: What movie features the best car chase? The Blues Brothers 30: How many Star Wars movies are there? Only 3 good ones. [edit: okay, I just read everyone elses responses, shame on me for missing Trogdor, also added spiffy blue text]] Last edited by caxis0; 05-June-04 at 12:51 PM.. | ||

| 1: What does the acronym "DOS" stand for in PC terms? Damned operating system 2: And what does it stand for if you're talking about AmigaDOS? Friendly Damned operating system 3: What feature did Atari ST owners claim made their machine superior to the Amiga? A motorola processor? A fpu? A kick starter? 4: And what features did the Amiga have that kicked the ST?s arse for 99.9% of owners? The ST had a cool letter designation like Mustang GT or Type R. Letter designations make things go faster so I don't know. 5: And how much would it have cost the other 0.1% to buy an upgrade? 42 6: Just what would Meat Loaf _not_ do for love? That or miss dinner. 7: Imagine you want to fit a 120mm blowhole on your case - what tool(s) would you use, and why? Masking tape, jig-saw to cut, dremel to clean. Because I'm way to impatient to cut one with a dremel. 8: Musically, what's the difference between Northern Soul and Motown? Motown was popular. Northern Soul was only popular in the UK. 9: Post links to the websites of three members of PR staff (mine not included), - OR - post a link to the PR page showing how to start folding@home. http://team.pcapex.com/ 10: How old is BigAkita? How old is dirt? 11: Who's been here the longest - me, BigAkita, or Duckwarrior? Duckwarrior 12: What username did I use before changing it to Jonny English? Jon the Prong 13: And why? Seafood allergy and some wanker with the same nick. 14: You've got a 4.5v, 25mA LED you want to run off a 12v supply - what resistor do you need? 330 Ohms 15: What's the cheapest way of reducing fan speed? Stick a playing card in the spokes using a clothes pin. Explain why this works using plumbing analogies. If you call a plumber to rewire your fan for 7v he will charge you outrageous sums of money. Stealing a clothes pin from mom is free. 16: Who burninates peasants & thatched roof cottages on a regular basis? Trogdor 17: Post a link for a bonus point. http://www.furnitureporn.com/ 18: What's The_Lost_Monkey's occupation? Finder of lost monkeys? 19: And what sort of motorcycle does he ride? 20: Someone suggested that the term "premod" should be abandoned in favour of an alternative. Who was it? Clown 21: What was the suggested term? POS Premod! 22: What's the name of Glitterkill's cat? Tinkles? 23: Post an amusing anagram of someone's PR username. Jenny Longish 24: What's the difference between a Crow and a Rook? A rook has a pale gray beak. It's still a crow. 25: How many horsepower (BHP) do you need to do 150mph? Less than 5, providing of course you're falling off a cliff at the time and can reach terminal velocity (124 mph). 26: How many BHP does the average horse develop? um...What is one Alex? 27: Why is torque (lbs-ft) more important than BHP anyway? Horsepower is good in straight lines, torque is good for everything else. 28: What's the answer to life, the universe and everything? Always bring your towel. 29: What movie features the best car chase? The original gone in sixty seconds was great. Vanishing point second. Ronin. The French Connection. Bullit. 30: How many Star Wars movies are there? Six, not counting the next one. | ||

| Etiquette & English Gentleman | You can always tell when PJ's back at work ![]() Anyway, my answers (you would have thought I'd get 30 out of 30, wouldn't you ![]() 1: What does the acronym ?DOS? stand for in PC terms? Disk Operating System 2: And what does it stand for if your talking about AmigaDOS? Device Operating System 3: What feature did Atari ST owners claim made their machine superior to the Amiga? A built in MIDI port 4: And what features did the Amiga have that kicked the ST?s arse for 99.9% of owners? A custom chipset 5: And how much would it have cost the other 0.1% to buy an upgrade? About £20/$12 6: Just what would Meat Loaf _not_ do for love? My guess would be "leave the last slice of pizza". Give yourself a point for any credible answer. 7: Imagine you want to fit a 120mm blowhole on your case ? what tool(s) would you use, and why? I'd use a jigsaw - a holesaw would be better in some ways, but you have to compromise on the size of the hole - too big or too small. Give yourself 1 point if you answered "Jigsaw" or "holesaw", deduct 2 if you said "Dremel". 8: Musically, what's the difference between Northern Soul and Motown? No idea really - I think it's down to copyright/trademarks - although Northern Soul is a little funkier & smoother than Motown IMO. If you've got a definitive answer, give yourself 3 points. 9: Post links to the websites of three members of PR staff (mine not included), - OR - post a link to the PR page showing how to start folding@home. You _should_ have posted the f@h page: http://team.pcapex.com/ 10: How old is BigAkita? Only BA himself can answer this, and he's not about to say, so give yourself a point for anything between 30 & 70 ![]() 11: Who's been here the longest - me, BigAkita, or Duckwarrior? Of the three of us, I've been a member of PR the longest, though I haven't been active the whole time 12: What username did I use before changing it to Jonny English? Jon_The_Prong 13: And why? It was a Ben Elton joke about impotence 14: You've got a 4.5v, 25ma LED you want to run off a 12v supply ? what resistor do you need? 300 ohms. If you got it wrong but showed your working, give yourself 1/2 a point. 15: What's the cheapest way of reducing fan speed? The 7 volt trick - connect the fans +ve wire to a 12v PSU line, and the -ve wire to a 5v line Explain why this works using plumbing analogies. Trick question - no number on this question. Deduct 1 point if you attempted to answer 16: Who burninates peasants & thatched roof cottages on a regular basis? TROGDOR !!!!!!!!!!! 17: Post a link for a bonus point. http://www.homestarrunner.com/trogdor.html and/or http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail58.html 18: What's The_Lost_Monkey?s occupation? Gravedigger 19: And what sort of motorcycle does he ride? Honda CX500 20: Someone suggested that the term "premod" should be abandoned in favour of an alternative. Who was it? I can't remember 21: What was the suggested term? "Stock" 22: What's the name of Glitterkill's cat? Harley, aka: Phatty Boom Catty, apparently. 23: Post an amusing anagram of someone?s PR username. Kayinstorm = Stinky amor ![]() 24: What's the difference between a Crow and a Rook? There are 2 differences afaik: * Rooks tuck their legs up when flying, Crows dangle them out behind; * Rooks have a patch of grey around their beaks, Crows are all black. 1 point for either. If you answered "Crow = movie & Rook = chess piece" or similar, give yourself a slap. 25: How many horsepower (BHP) do you need to do 150mph? About 200BHP 26: How many BHP does the average horse develop? 12. Really. 27: Why is torque (lbs-ft) more important than BHP anyway? BHP = torque x engine speed; 150 lbs-ft @ 2000rpm is far more useful in the real world than 150BHP @ 6000rpm 28: What's the answer to life, the universe and everything? 42. It's the question that's the problem. 29: What move features the best car chase? I'd disagree, but I guess the consensus will be "Bullitt" 30: How many Star Wars movies are there? 4. Part 3 hasn't been released yet, and I really don't like to talk about The Ph*nt*m M*n*ce How did you do? 30 or more points: Are you sure you're not my schizoid alter ego? You know more than I do. Congrats on an exceptionally high score - you really are an uber-geek. 25 to 29: A great effort. You have a wealth of useless information stored in your wetware, unfortunately its of very little use, even when playing Trivial Pursuits. When groups of geeks get together, you are the Alpha Geek. 20 to 24: A good effort, but you need to get out less. 15 to 19: Chances are you got all the tech questions right, or all the obscure trivia. Broaden your interests a bit - specialisation is for insects. 10 to 14: You're probably a noob to PR ? I bet you don?t enough know what old timers are talking about when we mention the PR sock, do you? -3 to 9: You're not enough of a geek to be at PR - get out while you still can | |
