Default Useful Computing Laws

A brief cut & paste job today, on the subject of useful laws for computing

Murphy's Law (s):
"Anything that can go wrong will go wrong"
Lots more here: http://dmawww.epfl.ch/roso.mosaic/dm/murphy.html

Moore's Law:
"The observation that the logic density of silicon integrated circuits has closely followed the curve (bits per square inch) = 2^(t - 1962) where t is time in years; that is, the amount of information storable on a given amount of silicon has roughly doubled every year since the technology was invented. This relation, first uttered in 1964 by semiconductor engineer Gordon Moore (who co-founded Intel four years later) held until the late 1970s, at which point the doubling period slowed to 18 months"
(source: http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms/m/Moore_s_Law.html)

Ohm's Law:
V = IR, where: V = voltage, I = current, & R = resistance.
(applications: http://forums.pcapex.com/showthread.php?t=12291 and http://forums.pcapex.com/showthread.php?t=12340)

Parkinson's Law:
"Data expands to fill the space available for storage"; buying more memory encourages the use of more memory-intensive techniques. It has been observed since the mid-1980s that the memory usage of evolving systems tends to double roughly once every 18 months"
(source: http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms...w_of_Data.html)

Gates's Law:
"The speed of software halves every 18 months."
(source: http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms/g/Gates_s_Law.html)

Coleslaw:
"Etymology: Dutch koolsla, from kool cabbage + sla salad: a salad made of raw sliced or chopped cabbage"
(source: http://www.m-w.com/home.htm)

How about Hewlit's three laws:

A user installing his/her own toner cartridge will:

1. NEVER remove the plastic tab
2. ALWAYS put the toner in upside down
3. SOMETIMES buy a new printer out of frustration

It's true, trust me.

I've never done any of those... though I did once drop a cartridge & spill toner all over the carpet. Still, it was at work, so what did I care?

What about the law of stupid users?

If there's a stupid user on the network, without fail they will email me 100 times to ask why they can't log in, and why this bubble keeps popping up about their caps lock being on.

Two more laws:

A user will:

ALWAYS accept the pop-up to install Bonzi, GAIN, etc...
NEVER accept the pop-up to install Windows Updates

Trust me, it's true.
