Okay... so it's not enough to carry a sword, a couple of shurikens, a kusari gama and wear a black hood to be a ninja in this day and age.

Don't get me wrong. The ol' ninjas are still pretty damn cool. Still, a few updates here and there keep a ninja right on the bleeding edge of being useful. Kind of like a CIA agent, but cooler.

TOP TEN: WAYS TO BE A MODERN NINJA:

1. Martial arts: do it! No ninja is going to be lacking a good move to get out of a situation quickly! The style may matter a bit as sport judo is a bit different from say Wushu (Chinese), Aikido (Japanese), Savate (French), Krav Maga (Isreali), Kali (Philipino), or ninpo (Ninjutsu). You can learn the ol' ninja skills, but finding a dojo can be hard (depending on where you live).

2. Computer skills: A modern day ninja has to move with the times. Hacking and cracking should be part of a modern ninja's arsenal. Still, how you come by those skills can be a little more difficult and practice should be done against your own equipment before venturing into other realms. Getting caught isn't overly good for a ninja's cred...

3. Understand modern security: Surveillance is as good as it has ever been. This isn't like a bad Hong-Kong ninja movie where our white-clad ninja "hero" slips into a fortified compound by using throwing stars to knock out cameras. The modern day ninja will need to be proficient in laying it out and studying a security setup to understand how to defeat one!

4. Modern Transport: There are a lot of ways to transport items between place to place, but the modern ninja has a much wider area to cover. Buy a cheap car that isn't for show. If it can disappear into traffic, you're l337 as hell in being unseen.

5. Hidden rooms and passages are still cool as hell: In being a modern day ninja, there are thousands of options for hiding gear, weapons, and other "stuff" in hard-to-find places. These can be as high or low tech as a person wants to go!

6. Understand Law: How l337 of a ninja are you going to be if you get caught? That answer: No ninja at all. You're a guy/gal in a Halloween costume who looks damned suspicious! Understand what is legal and what isn't in your area.

7. Disguises: You can't go around dressed like an 18th century Japanese farmer, actor, monk, etc... these days, a businessman, blue-collar worker, or delivery person are about as see-through as a person can get.

8. Weapons: Let's face it. Swordsmanship still kicks much ass, but what about modern weapons? A good ninja should be able to use whatever they come across, be it a stick or a fully automatic weapon!

9: Training: The world is your training ground. Every piece of information is a part of a puzzle that can help you blend in, adapt and overcome! This can include SCUBA diving, hiking (disappear into the mountains), home repair (what better way to spy on someone), or other skill. Everything can be used!

10. IQ!: The ninja of old had to be smart enough to not get caught, but the modern ninja needs to have a job and be able to blend in. This means a job skill that pays well enough to keep a ninja in weapons and training, but not make them famous! Don't get me wrong, you can be a famous ninja, but keeping your night activities a secret can be much more difficult!

And this is why pirates are better-- you don't have to blend in or take martial-arts classes to be a pirate.

Yeah, but pirates tend to lose to ninjas. Besides, try being a modern day pirate (aside from software)! Nothing like getting blown apart by the coast guard!
