| I don't know about everyone else, but I'm sick of this question. I went off at an MSN article that mentions that girlfriends should ask their boyfriends about their financial history before hooking up with them... this reminds me of a girl I went out with who was pretty proud of the fact she owned property (slum lord property, but property) and wanted to know if I had "investments". I guess I "invested" my money into education... oops, guess that was the wrong answer (We managed to go out about three times before we broke up... and that third date was painful). Getting back to the question "Where do you see yourself if five years?" how many people answer honestly? How many people say, "I see myself graduating from law school while completing my minor in marine biology while I wait for NASA to contact me about their selection for the next shuttle crew... oh, and I'm publishing a book and walking on wine as I converted a lake from water." Now then, having a five year plan isn't a bad idea, but let's face it, the plan is part one. I've known people with the same five year plan for years. They never get any closer to their goal, but someday, God willing... they'll get started and in five years, they'll be something by gummit! I've also known quite a few people who feel they have to answer that question in one of three ways. 1. "Uhhh... I don't know" (These people are usually saying number 2, they just don't know it) 2. "Probably where I'm at now, but older". 3. Make up shiz. "I'm going to uhhh... become a ninja! With an MBA! Fear my future Business-Ninja skills!" From people I've talked to, responses 1 and 3 are the most common. Who the hell wants to admit that they aren't going anywhere in life? Don't get me wrong, some people actually have that answer in the form of wise investments, education, or other dreams... but when a person from your personal life asks that question, what do you respond? Spouse/ girlfriend: "Hopefully still sexing you... with gusto!" "Right here in this couch, baby. Now fetcheth me the corn chips!" (in other words, alone on the couch watching pr0n if she has any self respect at all) "I see myself hooking up with your best friend and having you kill both of us in some sort of screwed up love-triangle. Hmmm... I should hide that gun..." "Finding all of the hidden packages in Grand Theft Auto 3?" "Wait, the answer is hazy... please ask again later." "Well... according to Miss McLeo, I am going to find an exciting new opportunity..." "Well... if your answer to that question is different than mine, we're both going to have some long discussions..." Friends: "Sexing your girl/boy friend... with gusto!" "Moving to a town with people who don't ask me annoying questions." Work: "I see myself as your boss so I can RIDE YOUR ASS for a change!" "I see... I see myself finding another job... with more pay... and a corner office... hint, hint." | ||

| I'm halfway done with #3!! Yeah, I hate this question too. If I knew what would happen fife years ago, I'd be filthy rich. But nobody can see that far out in the future on anything significant. /You forgot: "Still sexing your mom with gusto" ![]() | ||

| I can honestly answer this with "I don't know, yet" I should know in a year. I do know I will still be running the marble shop. It has been the best job I ever had. My plans with a family were going great until the woman decided to hang it up because I wouldn't send my son back to his mother. That was the only thing that pissed her off the most, she didn't feel she came first in my life. Well after that revelation she didn't and never would have. I have since re-evaluated my life and let me tell you I have learned allot about myself in general. I can honestly say "thank you" to her, because it's the best thing to happen to me in the 9 years we were together. | ||

| I just changed jobs last November. Almost a year into it and I like the direction things are heading in. My answer would be a #2. Finally got a motorcycle again, bought a pool table (dang never had one before), finally starting to build a retirement fund, purchased a new house. The only thing missing is a hottie that doesn't want to move in but has no problem staying over. Guess I am just gonna have to wear my beer goggles more often for that one.![]() | ||

| Retarded... ![]() ...uh, I mean, retired ... from my current job, and starting another career... if my knees and back hold out that long, or I don't go off the deep end and get myself in trouble for doing something a little too "old school" in this new, kinder, gentler Army of ours...I'll have to keep working, but having myself set up with one pension complete while I am working another full-time job, I should be more than able to not just keep my head above water financially, but to save some here and there for a very comfortable retirement for myself and the family... | ||

| I don't have any goals for the next 5 years... I have a destination. I know where I will end up (as a network engineer somewhere with my bachelors degree in Internet System Security). Goals (if not accomplished) just lead to disappointment. I have a destination and with the credentials I am working for (A+, CCNA, CCNP, MCSE, etc. etc.) getting an admin spot somewhere will not be too hard. Am I accepting the lowest common denominator? Nope, just modest. I dont care about being super rich with a Ferrari in the drive-way and a 5'9" 100lbs blonde chick in my arms that will divorce me in a year just to get alimony. I would be just as happy with a Honda Accord, a two bedroom house, and a fat chick that loves to cook and wont mind a prenup. If i have to have a goal, i would have to say paying off my school loans within 5 years. | ||

| In 5 years both of my kids should be out of the house. That leaves just me and Das Frau. I plan on spending a lot of time naked in the house and will encourage her to do the same. I will have some sort of RV or camper by then that we can use on weekend excursions. I will also be looking for work more North of where I currently am in Kansas. I would love to get back to ND but will settle for NE, SD, or MT. That will all depend on where I can transfer to and still remain in government service. In 15 years I will stop working. I have always said that at age 58 I'm done, I will hold to that. I will have 3 pensions by then; my military retirement, my government retirement, and my retirement fund. If I can't live on that I am screwed because I will refuse to work beyond my 58th birthday. | ||

| Apex Advanced Techie | i have absolutely no idea where I will be in 5 years, and that doesnt concern me one bit. The truth is I spent most of my life making detailed plans and guess what....none of them ever worked out. It wasnt a matter of patience or diligence, but rather something random always happened that threw a monkey wrench in my plans (so the expression goes). I dont know if anybody ever saw the recent movie Dan in Real Life. It wasnt great, but the ending scene had a neat little message that I enjoyed. It's something I've been trying to put into words for years and some hollywood writer just beat me to it. He said something along the lines of "don't make plans. Plan to be surprised." Now that doesnt mean you stop trying and live in your parents basement and wait for opportunity to come find you, I'm simply saying that I find it pointless to say I'm going to have X job in X city and be with X girl when more than likely it won't happen. My advice is simply work hard and enjoy the little surprises. | |
