Question Economic stimulus package

Sooo... if things happen as announced, all us working folks in the states are due for $600 per person.

What are you planning on spending it on?

I believe I'm going to install some wireless routers in the homestead.

If I'm working again, I may just throw some towards the pc, otherwise, it all goes into bills to keep us afloat.

Let's see if Mr. Bush's C average in math class adds up.

We get 100 billion dollar economic stimulus package in 2008 and 159 billion over the next ten years.

We have a 350 billion dollar Federal budget deficit for 2008 and that's not factoring in the "package".

We have a nine trillion dollar plus national debt increasing at a rate of 1.4 billion dollars per day.

Divide nine trillion by 300 million Americans and that means we each owe over 30 thousand dollars.

$30,000
-$600
_______
$29,400 in the red

I think I'm going to stock up on tuna and beans and look for a nice cardboard box to call home.

Gee... I'll stimulate the economy by maybe putting a pitiful dent in my college loans. Guess there isn't much of an education budget in ye olde' future-of-America plans...

Oh well... at least I'll spend it all in one shot, like they're hoping.

Lord knows if that will pick up the economy or not!

Buy another Probe. The 1st-gen 89 GT turbo that I have wanted forever and can never seem to find in good shape. There's one down the street and it's in good shape, it's one of my dream cars.

I don't have a lot of bills, but this "stimulus package" isn't going to do **** for the economy. What we need is people to buy houses, people are thousands of dollars in the hole on their mortgages teetering on the edge of foreclosure and the government thinks 600 dollars is going to do something.

I don't need 600 dollars, my house is paid off and my car is paid off and I have no debt, give that to Joe Six Pack who has a family to support, who's 20k in the hole and 5 months behind on his mortgage because he took an adjustable rate mortgage and his property taxes have gone through the roof.

(It's actually $300 per taxpayer + $300 per household,some families with 2 working spouses will get $900)

At least that's not what the House's plan is:

If it passes the Senate without any changes and Bush signs it, you may get your check in May.

I hate to be Monsignor Doomsayer but as I recall from my Macroeconomics class [circa 1988] that tax rebates do little if anything to stimulate the economy. Any of you college boys taking macro right now and could quiz the prof after class? Would be interested ...

My $1500 goes straight in the debt hole. We'll survive another month. But my guess is the second Great Depression is nigh on upon us and there is nothing the government can do.

A look at some indicators:
1] We have massive Iraq war debt and the Chi-coms hold alot of it. If they all decide to cash in at once we become an instant third-world nation.

2] The Japanese used to buy up American properties one at a time. Now the Arabs are buying banks that own lots of properties.

3] US$1.06 = CDN$1

4] OPEC may refuse dollars soon and take only Euros.

5] The subprime mess affects everyone - banks are loaning money to no one for any reason. And a three-quarter point drop in the prime will not change that. I even know banks that are refusing to repossess certain properties despite the lendee being months behind because there is no one to sell the property to and their repo operations are already strained to the max.

6] Gas is +US$3. It isnt coming back down. Ever.

7] If any of the presidential candidates has a clue about how to run a MASSIVE economic restructuring [not the New Deal necessarily but of that magnitude], then I sure haven't heard it. And we still have a year of the currently clueless adminstration. GWB has bankrupt every business he touched - and he may have done so to America.

8] Toyota=GM in sales

9] The city of Atlanta may have to be largely abandoned late this year if the current drought holds or worsens. There will be no water.

10] Much of America lacks the basic skills to compete in a global economy. Even scarier is the fact that most of America lacks basic survival skills. Can you grow enough food to keep you fed? Find water? Fish? Hunt? Mend a broke bone? It may be coming to that. And being really good at Halo is not going to be as handy as you think.

A hard rain is gonna fall - got your umbrella?
