I don’t know about you, but I find the standard MS “DING Diddle-ding … ding … … ding … … ding” startup sound absolutely infuriating & replace it or delete immediately on anything I build.

But what if it’s someone else’s machine? Like a cow-irker whose insists on having the volume up high & constantly reboots. You could disable their speakers by removing the 3.5mm jack plug from the “out” socket & moving it to the “in” … but there’s a strong chance that they’ll figure it out after a day or two.
Much better I think to replace the sound.

Note: cracking is naughty… but if someone leaves their machine unattended & logged in, well, they might as well have left you a written invitation. Remember the 11 th commandment – “Don’t get caught”

If you actually _Like_ them you could replace it with something like one of the following, depending on their/your taste:
1 – The intro from The Doors’ “Riders in the Storm”
2 – the riff from “Smoke on the Water”
3 – the riff from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Freebird”
4 - the bit from “Bohemian Rhapsody” when it starts to ROCK !

You could also think of a sound appropriate to the sort of machine in question:
5 – large capacity V8 with straight throughs starting – for recent Athlons
6 – big turbodiesel engine starting – older Athlons
7 – 1275 Mini starting after a couple of attempts – Durons
8 – hamster running in a wheel – P2’s & similar
9 – a bit of wind, tumbleweed rolling across the road, a bell tolling balefully in the distance – 586’s
10 – fingernails being drawn across a blackboard – anything with an Intel chip in it

You could go for something even more annoying and/or worrying:
11 – Homestar Runner’s rendition of “The Windows Sound” (TM)
12 – a two hour long recording of a really loud rig
13 - Â… or something that sounds suspiciously like a failing HDÂ’s click of death

Or, if youÂ’re trying to get them fired, snippets of totally unsuitable music may be worth considering. My top suggestions are:
14 –Korn’s "A.D.I.D.A.S"
15 –ICE T’s “Girls LGBNAF”
16 – Most stuff by NWA
17 - _anything_ by the 2 Live Crew

I personally like the Creative Labs Sound...the Thunder is Awesome! Sounds great with 5.1 speakers.

Go to Control panel then double click sounds and audio devices then click the sounds tab and sellect the sound you want to change from the list. Click browse and find the file you want to use.

personaly i disbale all sounds in windows, cuz they make me go crazy.

the worst story i have on windows sounds was one of my friends, who just use pc's for gaming. on his pc alle the possible things in the windows sound list was the bloody win98 error chime. he had had that for about 4 months before i removed it
