Default 80s movies. Egads!

Well gang, Friday has me working a nifty 16 hour day, driving back from Great Falls at two in the morning... worked through a part of yesterday, plus all the personal stuff I haven't had time to mess with this week and I just managed to finish a 1,200 word essay on network topologies. I would like to sing praises to the god of caffeine for getting me through my life at this point.

Bitching aside (mostly just explaining why my writing schedule if for Saturday and I just never seem to make it anymore!)... let's get down to today's post.

TOP SEVEN WORST FREAKIN' MOVIES THAT WERE HUGE IN THE 80s!

1. Pretty in Pink: I saw this movie for the first time last week, as my girlfriend and I usually enjoy giving bad movies the "Mystery Science Theater" treatment. This more than answered our prayers for a truly hideous movie. I'm not sure how Molly Ringwald made it into these movies in the 80s... but ugh! If you're looking for a laugh-fest that will have you literally dropping your jaw at how bad it is, this 'un is for you.

2. Dirty Dancing: This was just too painful. With a wing and a prayer, I made it through this peice of offal. Holy crap, why were dance movies so freakin' popular in the 80s?!?

3. RED DAWN:

The holy grail of the 80s. Complete with a storyline that can be shot full of as many holes as were in the plot. Remember those delightfully whacky days when we knew who was out to get us. That of course, being those RED BASTARDS!

4. Flashdance:

WHOAH! This chick has the emotional maturity of a 13 year old and the dancing talent of Pee-Wee Herman. Bad, bad, bad!!!

5. Commando

Ahh, the raw days when the plot sickened! Our favorite heavily-accented muscle-man defeats and entire army by himself in a story that takes testosterone to the max!

6. Maximum Overdrive

Still one of my favorite horrible movies. It's like it was just meant to BE that bad! How does a comet control all of the vehicles on the planets (oh, except the newlyweds car)... It was best said in "Austin Powers"... "Try not to think about it Austin, that goes for you folks too!"

7. The Terminator

Wow... I hadn't seen this movie in years. It didn't hold up quite like I'd hoped! The special effects were pure cheese, and the acting could have been a bit better. I worshipped this movie as a kid, so this was a little embarassing! Still, worth watching again and again!

Well folks... I'll probably add more when I get back to the video store... I'm thinking I'm probably going to rent "Night of the Comet" if I can find it!

Red Dawn... A movie that will make any kid believe they can take over the world with a rifle and grenades. A definite feel-good flick and I still enjoy watching every now and then.

Maximum Overdrive... I am into racing and big motors; I was rooting for the trucks the entire time.

Terminator... A turning point in CGI within movies. I can't stand to watch it anymore, but it was ground breaking.

I have never seen Pretty in Pink, Dirty Dancing, or Commando. I admit I did see Flash Dance when it went to theater in Frankfurt in 1984, but I only watched it because the club was closed and the movie was free. We slammed a bottle of Tequila and had a great time there.

"She's a maniac, maniac, dancing on the floor. Dancing like she's never danced before."

At least there was honesty in song lyrics back then.

I have to comment on Maximum Overdrive too: That movie sucked even back then. Steven King defined the huge gulf between writing a good book and producing a good movie. I took a date to see that movie and the date ended about like the movie did. I blame Steven to this day.

Dude, of course it was horrible! It ranks up there with Plan 9 (well... almost) and Bug Buster!

C'mon... nobody mentioned Weird Science?

There were two large plusses for the movie, but other than that...

Man I saw Maximum Overdrive for the first time when I was in 5th grade (1987). That stuff is scary when your that young and never watched horror movies.

I've seen it since then and your right, it's terrible.

I'm kinda with ya on this 'un...

I thought the new series sucked hard... I'll admit that "Return of the Jedi" could have probably done without those freakin' care bears (oops... "Ewoks") but all in all, I still like ye olde Star Wars.

Empire Strikes back was the first film I ever went to at the movies...

Back to the Future
Blues Brothers
Risky Business ("sometimes you just gotta say....."
Caddyshack
Fast Times at Ridgemont High

SW just rubs me entirely the wrong way. Sure I can't deny I liked them as a kid, but when Ep1 came out I tried watching them again and almost had to stop because of C-3PO, R2-D2 and Chewbacca, just couldn't stand their incessant stupidity. The acting was laughable. The only thing I like about the movies is the score, John Williams is top notch. But don't get me wrong, this is just my opinion . (Ohh, and I despise Yoda, he just gets on my finest)

Godfoot, how could you forget Blade Runner?

I have the original SW soundtrack on record. If you can play vinyl you can still buy the soundtracks from each movie.
