I don't really know because I haven't given it much though yet.
But red has a lot going for it as the first of "the primaries".
In the red
Seing red
Red Red Wine

Now green is also pretty dang popular with plenty of it's own sayings:
Green with envy
greenbacks
collard greens

But my personal favorite has got to be blue.
Blueberry Hill
Benjamin Buford Blue (Bubba)
Blue's Clues
and my personal favorite, "Go Blue!" (University of Michigan)

You forgot to mention that red looks kick ass when matched with black

Not to mention that green is a secondary color.

The other primary color is....?

There are 2 different sets of "primary" colors. One relates to color as a pigment (i.e. paints) and the other relates to color as a light (wavelengths).

Red, Blue, Yellow (pigmentation)

Magenta, Cyan, Yellow (light wavelengths)

Mixing blue and yellow paint makes green, but that isn't the case when mixing the equivalent light wavelengths. Mixing all 3 primary pigments will make a messy brown, but doing the same with 3 primary light wavelengths results in pure white light.
