| Etiquette & English Gentleman | Years ago, one of my university lecturers told me that in the absence of any moral sense (he was making a generalisation, not referring to me as an individual … I think), the best thing for people to do was consider if they could argue the case for their actions to the three most significant members of the opposite sex in their life, and have them accept it. For me, this would be my grandmother, my mum & my sister. Following this rule would mean I have no fun, as my grandmother (who I love dearly) is a far-right reactionary old dingbat, and my sister (who is less of a psycho hose beast than she used to be due to being permanently knackered due to having 4 kids) is only marginally more liberated than my Gran. Anyway, I’ve “borrowed†two scenarios for you to think about: 1 - You’re offered some computer kit at a rock bottom price, say for example a top of the range graphics card that you really want & have been saving up for. You can save yourself a couple of hundred notes by taking it, but in all probability it’s been stolen to fund the seller’s drug habit. So, do you: A: take it & boast about your bargain; B: take it & keep quiet; C: take it & confess all to the next priest you see, D: refuse it, and pay full price for the item when you can afford it. 2 – You’ve been asked to evaluate two different vendors for computer parts. You’ve made your decision, based on the usual parameters like cost, quality & possibly even the ethics of the companies involved, but you haven’t yet communicated your decision to your superiors. Further assume that there’s very little to choose between the vendors, and that both would do the job well. The night before you announce your decision, you’re contacted by a representative of the loosing vendor, who just happens to be an attractive member of the gender of your preference. S/he wants to meet up & discuss the issue, but it becomes clear that s/he doesn’t have any new information, and is offering, well, to save the blushes of our younger readers, _something else_. So do you: A do the wild thing, but keep your decision unchanged, B do the wild thing & change your decision, C agree, but then go out for a beer on your own, D just refuse. Answers? OK: 1: You were offered half inched computer bits, so did you: A - boast about it? Are you stupid or something? B - keep quiet? You’re immoral, but sensible… C - Confess all? Look, if you knew it was wrong, why did you take it? D - Save up … by which time it’ll be out of date ![]() 2: You were offered … Well, either you know or you don’t … Did you: A – not change your decision? You’re immoral but principled B – change your decision? You’re immoral _and_ a wussy. C – change your mind? You’re just a wussy. D – refuse? Good luck explaining that pay per view “entertainment†on your expense account! You were expecting me to take this seriously ? ![]() | |

| 1. If I thought the thing would work, I would buy it and keep my mouth shut. Who needs warranty? IÂ’ll just over-clock the thing till it coughs anyway. 2. Alas, I would have to refuse Â… the wife would not only frown upon it but, take my rig in the divorce. | ||

| 1. E. beat up the "salesman" and take his shiznit. He shouldn't be doing drugs and stealing crap anyway. ![]() 2. Take up the girl on the offer, and OFFER to change the vote... but only if she agrees to be your nightly love-slave. Appreciate a company that is willing to "go that extra mile". ![]() | ||

| 1 I would have to agree with BA on this one. I've had soo much of my own stuff stolen. I'de send that prick to the hospital. 2A - If she is willing to be as unethical as to hoe herself out to me for a rating, It would be unethical of me to ethical and keep up with my side of the unethical bargain... I'de even make sure I got it on video... Last edited by FeRaL; 28-October-03 at 02:08 PM. | ||
