LAKE LUZERNE, N.Y. - A teenager who put bullets in a vise and whacked them with a hammer to empty the brass shell casings was wounded in the abdomen by approximately the 100th bullet he hit, according to Warren County deputies.
Damion M. Mosher, 18, had been discharging .223-caliber rounds, placing them in a steel vise, putting a screwdriver on the primer, and striking the screwdriver with the hammer, deputies said.
Deputies were called to his home in Lake Luzerne shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday when one bullet went about a half-inch into his abdomen. He was treated at Glens Falls Hospital and was released. No charges were filed.
Mosher told authorities he was trying to empty the rounds to collect the brass casings for scrap.
Sheriff Larry Cleveland said about 100 other rounds that Mosher hit had "fizzled," but one was somehow sent with more force. It was unclear if the bullet ricocheted or hit him directly.
An employee of Capitol Scrap Co. in Albany said Monday the business pays $1.70 a pound for scrap brass shell casings.
Cleveland said Mosher's shells amounted to just a few pounds.
Lake Luzerne, at the southeastern edge of the Adirondacks, is 45 miles north of Albany.
Ok, so here's the math for those of you too lazy or named Damion M. Mosher to figure out.
$1.70 / lb X 2 lbs = $3.40
20 rounds of .223 62-gr = $3.75 (as cheap as my cursory search could find) = $.1875 ea.
100 rounds X $.1875 = $18.75
Money lost by wasting 100 rounds (not including labor or hospital fees) = $15.35
Wasting fifteen bucks and getting your dumbass shot in the process = PRICELESS

Well I imagine that he got them for free or really cheap and didn't buy them with the intention of selling them for scrap...
But the point being the fool could have sold them for $15 more than scrap value (or even greater depending on the ammo's brand) as loaded ammo and saved the trip to the ER. Some people deserve the right to perish from the wounds of their own stupidity.
Well I read a couple boxes of ammo I have laying around and have to say they don't explicitly say not to smack them with a hammer. Guess that should be added to the list so the folks with single digit IQ's don't hurt themselves. The silver box is Winchester, green box is Sellier&Bellot (heck the S&B ammo's warnings are in 4 languages no less). You would think that would be enough of a warning to not do something stupid.

But Dumbass could claim that, since he lost the original boxes, he didn't see any such warning labels. Each bullet should have a warning label on the casing: "Hitting shells with a hammer could be hazardous to your health." But that probably wouldn't help either, since Dumbass is probably illiterate.
Around here it's the " Asshat Award " and much more fitting.
Agreed Actually, the "Darwin Award" reference was supposed to imply that I'm not surprised he didn't kill himself and/or castrate himself with his special brand of stupidity.
