Talking Swearing without Swearing

Before I get on with todayÂ’s post, IÂ’d like to say a big thanks to pimp_joose for giving my sig a makeover

>^..^<

If Taz gets his way, profanity in the galleries will become a punishable and/or editable offence. IÂ’m not for a minute saying that would be a bad thing, the galleries are often the first port of call for a visitor to PR.

However, I don’t know about you, but I’ve been planning for the future – evolving new strategies to be profane with resorting to effing and blinding. This will be a real challenge for me, there are times when I could make a sailor blush.

My first thought was to deliberately misspell words, but you’d have to be subtle – simply rearranging standard Anglo-Saxon 4 letter words is not going to be acceptable. However, if those words actually make another word, I think that could work. “Holy Carp!” and “What a piece of tish!” are examples that spring readily to mind.

We’re all geeks here, so “Sci-Fi swearing” could be quite popular … here’s the results of my “research”:

Red Dwarf gave us the single, if widely-applicable word “smeg”.
As in, “What the smegging smeg’s the smeghead gone & smegging done?”.

Judge Dredd had “drokk” as the only expletive that the Judges were allowed to use. I don’t see any reason why the usual modifiers couldn’t be applied to give “drokking drokker”, and so on.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy “Trilogy” was pretty short on replacement expletives as I recall. The only swearing that comes to mind was Zaphod Beeblebrox’s “Zarking Fardwarks!”.

The Star Wars universe is a total let down Â… take the Battle of Yavin for example.
When Luke saw his bestest bud Biggs get blown away, all he could come up with was that pithy epithet about “shooting stars”. When Darth Vader got shot up the jacksy by the Millennium Falcon & got sent spinning off into space, well, I don’t think a half-hearted metallic “arrrrrrggghhh” would have been _my_ first response.

Star Trek is another disappointment … The only incident of swearing I can remember was Jean-Paul Picard muttering “Merde!”. Probably whilst being attacked by Romulans. That would be my guess anyway. I’m certain someone here will be able to give us the precise scenario. (I need a “troll” emoticon here!)

Farscape is another matter. Far darker than Star Wars & Star Trek, itÂ’s rich in replacement profanity, and takes the art of swearing without swearing to a new level.
“Frell” is the general-purpose profanity, and while the –ing suffix can be used, circumstances that would usually call for an –er modifier actually have their own specific term: “Frelnik”. There’s also “Dren” and the closely related “Drannit”, and the popular “Tralk”. Other words you might want to experiment with are “Hezmana”, “Loomasm”, “Fahrbot”, “Mivonks”, “Thoddo” and “Yotz”.

Yep, Farscape was great … not counting the last series, the low budget & the theme music … still, it was better than the music to “Enterprise” though – what frelling smeghead wrote that tish?

Jean-Paul Picard

Jean-Luc Picard, or as Q said in Tapestry "John Luck Placard"

Does that make me a trekkie? I can remember dialog by character and episode.

How about Felbicarb from Battlestar Galactica?

Another good article Jonny. You might have just planted the seeds which could blossom into a new PR language.
